"Emily? Are you still there?" Arthur asked.
"I'm here," Emily said, pulling herself back to the present. "Tell me about the patient."
"He's near brain death. Right now, his vital signs are entirely dependent on the ventilator," he said, dropping his voice low. "He's a kind man. He signed a donor consent form a long time ago, but his family isn't ready to accept it yet."
Emily's heart jumped into her throat. She closed her eyes and made up her mind. "Text me the address. I'm on my way."
"Emily, his family's really emotional right now. You..."
"I know," she cut him off. "But I have to try."
After hanging up, Emily booked the earliest flight to Creston City. After packing a few essentials into her suitcase, she walked out of her office.
At the elevator, she bumped into Vivian carrying a well-wrapped fruit basket.
Vivian was stunned for a moment when she saw Emily. Then, her lips curled into a mocking smile. "Well, if it isn't our heroine, Dr. Sterling."
Her gaze flicked to the suitcase. "So, you're leaving while Mr. Holton Senior is still in the ICU? Aren't you his lead surgeon? Bold of you to talk big when you might not even stick around for the operation."
Emily didn't even spare Vivian a glance. She simply pressed the elevator's down button.
Being ignored made Vivian bristle. She stepped forward to block her path. "Emily, I'm talking to you!"
Right then, the elevator arrived.
Emily stepped inside and shot Vivian a cold look. "Move."
Something in that look made Vivian flinch. By the time she'd gathered up her pride again, the doors had already slid shut.
Vivian stomped her foot and seethed in frustration.
If Emily was leaving in such a hurry, then something must have happened.
With that thought in mind, Vivian dropped the fruit basket and chased after her.
...
Three hours later, Arthur met Emily at the curb outside his family's private hospital in Creston City. Sunlight glinted off his white coat as he jogged toward her.
"Emily, you made it," he said, relief softening his features.
Emily nodded and asked, "Where's the family?"
