By late afternoon, word had spread throughout the medical community that Emily would be leading the country's first heart transplant.
Mallory had just started her night shift when the news hit the nurse station like a bomb. Her hand trembled, and hot water splashed onto her wrist.
Emily must have lost her mind. She had worked so hard to secure her position as the head of cardiothoracic surgery at the municipal hospital.
Everything she had today didn't come easy, so how could she risk it all on a surgery that had almost no chance of success?
The more Mallory thought about it, the more it unsettled her.
She set down her cup and hurried to the on-call room.
The room was empty except for Emily inside.
"Mills, are you out of your mind?" Mallory gripped her shoulders, panic creeping into her voice.
But Emily didn't turn around and merely nodded.
She wasn't as calm as she looked, but there was no backing out now. After all, Edward's life was on the line.
"I'm not out of my mind," she said, finally facing Mallory with a smile that looked worse than tears. "Don't worry. I know what I'm doing."
Mallory noticed the red veins in Emily's eyes and felt a deep ache in her heart. "Do you know what you're doing? This surgery has never been done here before. You know how slim the chances are. You can't gamble your whole career on this!"
Emily didn't respond.
Of course she knew the risks, but she didn't have any other options.
Mallory blew out a breath like she'd made a decision she would hate herself for later on. "Then, I'm your first assist."
Emily looked up and refused at once. "No! It's too risky. I can't let you..."
"Why not?" Mallory cut her off. "If you're going to be reckless, I'm not letting you do it alone. We'll do it together!
"Alright, I've already decided. You have no say in this." She didn't give Emily any chance to refuse. She was as stubborn as ever.
Emily looked at Mallory, her eyes glistening with tears.
In the end, she only nodded. "Okay."
Just then, there was a knock at the door, and a young nurse peeked in with guilt written all over her face. She had been the one assigned to assist with the surgery.
"Dr. Sterling, I'm sorry," she murmured, wringing her fingers and avoiding Emily's gaze. "My family... They don't want me involved in this surgery. I can't scrub in." She was afraid of the responsibility, and even more afraid of the fallout if things went wrong.
Emily wasn't surprised. She just nodded and said, "I understand. Let Ms. Rowley know."
The nurse let out a sigh of relief, murmured a quick thanks, and hurried out of the room.
