After a fun night out, it took Brenda a while to finally make her way to Harold's office downtown to drop off some business documents.
While handing over the papers, Brenda casually mentioned, "I was thinking of setting you up with someone, but no dice. She's taken. Just like her, she's a trust fund baby."
Harold offered a wry smile. "Thanks, Brenda. Always playing matchmaker for me, huh?"
"What's there to thank me for if it didn’t pan out? The girl's a catch though. You know Cicely, right? The beauty mogul of Millstone? That's her daughter. Rich as they come. But when I mentioned you, she shut it down immediately. Cordelia was saying you've got a one-sided thing going on with her. Guess I'll stop playing Cupid," Brenda said with a shrug.
Harold paused for a moment. "You're talking about...?"
"Cordelia's friend, Victoria."
Harold thought to himself: So it was her. He had no idea she came from such wealth. All he knew was that she seemed pretty headstrong, not really considering others' feelings, and frankly, that was something Harold couldn't deal with.
"Yeah, no sparks there," Harold admitted.
"You're passing up on a golden opportunity. Could've saved you a decade of grinding," Brenda whispered conspiratorially. "But then again, it's probably all for nothing. Last I heard, she's probably cozying up to that Daniel guy, her mom's pick. You know how these elite families are, keeping it all in the one percent. We ordinary folks shouldn't fret over it."
"Is that so?" Harold replied nonchalantly. "Oh, by the way, Brenda, I'm looking to rent a new place. Got any leads?"
"Sure, I'll keep an eye out for you," Brenda promised.
Harold was doing well at Brenda's firm. She was a generous boss and had given him a raise. His current place was a trek from the office, and it was starting to take its toll on him. Most of his day was wasted in transit, so a move was definitely in order.
