The Contracted Ever After (Cordelia and Ronan) novel Chapter 758

Back home.

When Cordelia's little one was just a few weeks along, they did a simple pregnancy test with a store-bought kit – and, sure enough, it was positive, no doubt about it. Cordelia figured they’d wait until they hit the three-month mark to listen in on the baby’s heartbeat – a milestone she was secretly eager for.

This time, Ronan picked out the clinic himself, steering clear of the one where Victoria worked. With Victoria’s recent rollercoaster of emotions, he didn’t feel comfortable putting their child in her hands.

“Don't be so quick to dismiss Victoria. She's a real pro at her job, and she's about to be promoted to head physician,” Cordelia chimed in, her confidence in Victoria's expertise unwavering.

“The world's full of pros, Cordelia. Plenty more out there who know their stuff just as well, if not better, than Victoria,” Ronan responded, clearly not as enthusiastic about singing Victoria's praises.

He chose “Serene Heart Private Clinic,” a gem within the Lumos Enterprises crown. The place was a breeze to deal with – none of the red tape you’d trip over in public hospitals.

“The docs here? All studied abroad. The least qualified among them holds a PhD. Still think they can’t measure up to your Victoria?” Ronan quipped.

Cordelia was at a loss for words. Whatever he said, went. Plus, lately Victoria had been a bundle of nerves over the whole Harold situation. Desperate to confront the new love in Harold's life, but stonewalled – the man had blocked her and wouldn’t take her calls. She feared showing up at his doorstep would only add insult to injury, losing face in the messiest of ways. So, Victoria was nursing her wounds in the shadows, heart heavy with a sorrow she couldn’t shake.

Lying there during the ultrasound, Cordelia watched the screen as the doctor pointed out the steady thrum of the baby’s heartbeat. She’d seen this little miracle before, so the novelty had somewhat worn off. Instead, her gaze was fixed on Ronan. He was glued to the monitor – a mix of nerves and wonder clear on his face. Cordelia had to stifle a giggle. This must have been a first for him.

It made her think back, feeling a pang of guilt for the distance she had once put between them. He had seemed so untouchable then, the high-flying CEO. Now, he was simply the father of her children – their second on the way. She remembered their strolls during her first pregnancy, the perfect photo she had snapped of him at his most dashing. Now, watching him, so engrossed and concerned, filled her heart to bursting. She made a silent vow: come what may, she would bring this child into the world. She wouldn’t let his care and worry be for naught.

Suddenly, Ronan turned to speak to her. Catching her gaze, he asked, “What are you looking at?”
