The Contracted Ever After (Cordelia and Ronan) novel Chapter 757

"Mr. August, you're just in your fifties. What's wrong?" Samantha asked, gently patting his chest to comfort him.

"It's nothing serious. I just got a bit anxious when my wife didn't answer my call." August's body was gradually recovering. "Thanks, Sam."

"Thank me? Even if I weren't your employee, I'd still help if I saw someone in trouble," Samantha said as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

"What's your story, Sam?" August inquired.

Samantha's eyelashes fluttered down as if reluctant to dredge up her past. "Both my folks passed away, and I didn't get much schooling. I followed my boyfriend to Finland, hoping for a fresh start. He wanted to get into that shady business of arranging marriages for immigration and making a quick buck off it. I told him it was wrong, but he wouldn't listen, so I left him. I've always believed in earning my keep with honest work, so I've been cleaning ever since."

August sighed, weighing the stark contrast between this hardworking girl's fate and that of someone like Cordelia—one seemed to be favoured by the stars, the other bound to the dust. Yet here she was, earnest and diligent, stuck doing grunt work.

"You saved me today; I want to make you my goddaughter. What do you say?" he offered.

"No, no, no," Samantha quickly protested, waving her hands as if the offer was too grand for her. "I'm not worthy. Truly, anyone would have done the same; I'm just doing my part. I don't deserve such an honor."

But deep down, Samantha was playing a clever game of hard to get. She knew that by suggesting she become his goddaughter, August had already taken a liking to her. Whether she accepted or not, he'd still see her as a goddaughter.

Her refusal was strategic, aiming to show she wasn't after any special favors and also to protect her from any potential exposure if August decided to share the news with Alana or Cordelia.
