“Alright, I promised I’d take you, so I’m not backing out.”
June grinned and bumped Lucie’s shoulder. “That’s what I call a real friend.”
“How about dinner tonight? What do you want to eat? My treat.”
“Hmm, I’m craving sushi.”
“Sushi it is!”
…
That night, to thank June for her help, Lucie took her to the fanciest sushi buffet in town.
After dinner, June wasn’t ready to call it a night and insisted on heading back to Lucie’s place.
As soon as they walked in, Lucie’s phone started buzzing. It was Elio.
“Hey…”
On the other end, Elio sounded concerned. “Hey, Lucie, what are you up to? I called twice and you didn’t pick up.”
“Oh, I was out having dinner. Didn’t hear my phone.”
“Dinner? With who?”
Lucie glanced at June, who quickly shook her head, warning Lucie not to mention her.
“Uh… just some friends.”
“Guys or girls?”
“Both.”
“Alright, then. I’ll let you go. I just got home and need to shower before bed.”
“Okay. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
After she hung up, June pouted, clearly annoyed. “That was Elio, wasn’t it?”
“Yeah.”
“Ugh, he’s so annoying. I don’t even know what I did to make him hate me so much. Last time, he even tried to hit me. If we hadn’t grown up together, I’d have given him a piece of my mind.”
Lucie chuckled awkwardly, not sure what to say.
“Whatever, let’s just get some sleep. We need to get up early tomorrow. It’s at least a two or three hour drive.”
“Alright, I’ll take the same room as last time.”
“Good.”
That night, June changed into one of Lucie’s pajamas, did her skincare routine, and headed to the guest room. But once she was in bed, she couldn’t sleep. All she could think about was Steven’s wicked, dangerous smile.
She wondered what he’s doing right now.
She grabbed her phone and messaged him.
[Hey Mr. Heath, are you asleep yet?]
[Come on, can’t you just reply once?]
Lucie glanced at the group. “Is this a lot?”
“You don’t think so?”
“It’s for safety. We’re two girls driving pretty far. Better to be careful.”
“Fine, whatever.”
They set off in three cars, heading toward a mountain near Westbrook. It was five in the afternoon by the time they arrived.
Lucie read the sign. “Golden Palace Resort.”
“Have you been here before?” June asked.
“No, but I’ve heard about it.”
June laughed. “This place has natural springs and over a hundred different pools. I come here every winter. It’s amazing.”
Lucie smiled. “Let’s go.”
“We can’t let the guys come in with us,” June pointed out, nodding at the male bodyguards.
Lucie thought for a second. They’d be in bikinis, and the whole resort was private and secure with staff everywhere. It should be fine.
“You can wait at the entrance.”
“Yes, Ms. Anderson.”
A little while later, Lucie, June, and Ruby headed into the resort together.
The place was huge—an entire mountainside, with outdoor pools set in beautifully landscaped gardens.
