“It’s fine. Freya isn’t the reckless type. At worst, this ointment won’t do much for me, but there’s no way it’ll ruin my face.” Cassidy knew perfectly well that this acne cream probably wouldn’t help her, but still—it was a thoughtful gesture from Caitlin. If she didn’t at least give it a try, wouldn’t that just trample all over Caitlin’s good intentions?
So of course, she’d use it.
Mrs. Prescott still looked uneasy. She picked up the little jar from the table, unscrewed the lid, and gave it a careful sniff. Only when she didn’t detect any odd or suspicious scent did she set it down, somewhat reassured.
She changed the subject. “Did Jimmy get anything out of going hiking with you all today?”
Cassidy shook her head. “You know what Jimmy’s like—he’s a closed book, never says a word more than necessary. Honestly, I was hoping to set him up with Freya, but who knew—”
She didn’t get to finish. Mrs. Prescott cut her off sharply. “Who? With whom? You were trying to set Jimmy up with who?”
“Freya,” Cassidy replied, looking up at her mother. “Why? What’s wrong?”
She liked Caitlin. Not just because Caitlin was pretty, but because she had real depth. That’s why Cassidy wanted Jimmy to end up with someone like Caitlin.
Mrs. Prescott threw up her hands in exasperation. “Ridiculous! Absolutely ridiculous! Freya? She’s divorced, for heaven’s sake! With Jimmy’s status, how could he possibly bring home a woman who’s already been married?”
Sure, divorce wasn’t the scandal it used to be. But a divorced woman still couldn’t compare to a young girl who’d never been married. Unless a man was desperate, who would willingly marry a ‘secondhand’ bride?
Especially someone like Jimmy—a rising star in the business world.
To Mrs. Prescott, the idea was pure fantasy.
Aside from her ‘Miss Gonzales’ title, what did Caitlin have to offer that was worthy of Jimmy?
Cassidy rolled her eyes. “Mom, what century are you living in? So what if she’s divorced? All that means is there’s one extra piece of paper in her past. She and her ex didn’t even have kids together, so why make such a big deal out of it?”
This was a modern world. So many couples lived together before marriage, did everything married people did, and then just moved on when things didn’t work out. How was that any different from being divorced?
To Cassidy, her mother’s thinking was just hopelessly outdated.
“No. Absolutely not.” Mrs. Prescott’s expression turned stern. “Cassidy, I don’t care how close you and Freya are—that’s your business. But you are not to play matchmaker between Freya and Jimmy. They’re just not suited for each other.”
They moved on to other topics.
Cassidy told Mrs. Prescott about The Ridge Viper incident, and the bet Caitlin had made with Raven.
Mrs. Prescott squinted in disbelief. “Honestly, I think Freya’s exaggerating. No matter how smart a snake is, it’s still just an animal. There’s no way it can remember a scent and track someone all the way home.”
“Well, that’s what Freya claims. I guess we’ll see in three days, won’t we?”
The next morning.
Because of her acne, the first thing Cassidy did upon waking was check her reflection in the mirror.
She stared, mouth agape in astonishment.
Normally, her face would be red and swollen when she got up—downright frightening to look at.

So happy for Carey, the reunion with her family is touching. Can we read more of Caitlin and Gordon? Readers are forgetting that Caitlin has a boyfriend by the way. Is it normal for their relationship to be erased in the storyline?...
Update please......
But where is Gordon?...
Great story, great author!...
