A wave of terror crashed over Katrina, threatening to swallow her whole.
She’d picked up her father’s call expecting good news—maybe a proud update, maybe a small family victory. Anything but this.
But instead, she’d been blindsided by catastrophe.
Her hands trembled violently. She took a shaky breath, struggling to steady herself. “Dad—Dad, are you—are you joking with me?”
A joke. It had to be a joke. Some cruel misunderstanding.
But her father’s voice on the other end was raw, his anger barely contained. “Joking? You think I’m in the mood for jokes right now? Didn’t you tell me Xavier was your boyfriend? Didn’t you say he was taking you to meet his family?”
“Then why are all the major corporations pulling out on us? Why is everyone saying you’ve offended Mr. Xavier Richards of the Richards family?”
“Do you have any idea what you’ve done? Every one of our partners is withdrawing their investment. The Prescott family is ruined! The Prescott Group is finished!”
“Katrina! What kind of stupid mess have you gotten us into?”
Just ten minutes ago, her father had been bombarded by calls—investors backing out, contracts abruptly terminated. He’d honestly wondered if he was dreaming.
Not long ago, with his daughter dating Xavier, he’d been the toast of Silverhaven, everyone eager to curry favor with him. Now he was just a target, trampled and discarded.
He’d always believed that Katrina’s relationship would be the Prescott Group’s golden ticket—never in his worst nightmares did he imagine his life’s work would collapse because of her.
Withdrawals? Offending the Richards family? The entire business world turning against them?
Katrina’s face was already ghostly pale from blood loss; now, it drained of what little color remained. She swallowed hard, forcing herself to stay calm. “Dad, please, don’t panic. Give me a second. I’ll get in touch with Xavier right away.”
Did Xavier really not care about her at all?
Katrina’s heart squeezed painfully at the thought, but she forced herself to believe otherwise. If Xavier knew she’d tried to take her own life, there was no way he’d just ignore her.
She turned back to Jeanette, suspicion sharpening her voice. “You didn’t even try to contact him, did you? He probably has no idea what’s happened to me!”
She’d always sensed Jeanette resented her—maybe even envied her.
“I did try! I texted him. The first time, he didn’t block me, but the second time, he did. See for yourself, if you don’t believe me!” Jeanette quickly pulled out her phone and scrolled through her messages, anxious to prove she wasn’t lying.
Katrina stared at the screen, her heart sinking like a stone.
Jeanette really had sent the messages. The first one went through. The second? Undeliverable. Blocked.

So happy for Carey, the reunion with her family is touching. Can we read more of Caitlin and Gordon? Readers are forgetting that Caitlin has a boyfriend by the way. Is it normal for their relationship to be erased in the storyline?...
Update please......
But where is Gordon?...
Great story, great author!...
