THE DIVORCE GAMBIT From Dumped Wife to CEO's Forever novel Chapter 949

Fortune had worked so hard to raise their daughter, and yet they had failed to protect him and give him a happy, peaceful retirement.

"Mrs. Gonzales, it was my duty."

Gordon didn't gloat or take undue credit. In front of Caitlin's parents, he remained respectful and humble, which made a very good impression. It was one of the reasons Carey approved of him so highly.

Three days later, after all matters were settled and a hospital check-up confirmed Fortune was in good health, the family of four boarded a flight back to The Capital.

Gordon had to stay behind to deal with business matters. Of course, there was another important reason: he was a little intimidated by Stuart. Whenever they made eye contact, he felt a twinge of guilt, as if he'd been caught stealing something precious from him.

Learning that Fortune had agreed to come back, Keira had a private courtyard on the estate specially prepared for him. She even went to the airport herself to pick them up.

"Fortune, from now on, just make yourself at home and don't worry about a thing. It might take some getting used to The Capital at first, but you'll settle in. There's a park nearby, and you'll make new friends in no time."

"Okay." Fortune nodded with a smile. "It's just… I feel like I'm being such a bother to you all!"

Hearing this, Keira frowned. "We're family. Don't talk about being a bother! Does that mean you've never thought of us as family? If you ask me, you should have come to live with us in The Capital a long time ago. It would have saved you all the back-and-forth."

"And we have a deal. Now that you're here, you're not allowed to leave again."

Caitlin chimed in, "Grandma's right! Grandpa, now that you're here, you can't sneak back home. If you ever want to visit Silverhaven, I'll take you back anytime."

Two days later, Gordon returned from Silverhaven. Skyler Cumming came to pick him up from the airport.

Skyler, wearing a white button-down shirt, waved enthusiastically from across the crowd. "Uncle Gordon! Uncle Gordon! Over here!"

Gordon was walking with his assistants.

Seeing Skyler, Gordon turned to the two men behind him. "Give me the bags. You two can head back to the office."

"Yes, Master Ninth." One of the assistants handed Gordon his briefcase.

Gordon took the briefcase and walked toward Skyler.

Skyler puffed out his chest. "Uncle, notice anything different about me today?"

"You got a tan?" Gordon glanced at Skyler.

"It's just a lipstick stain. Is that really something to brag about?" Gordon glanced at Skyler, his lips thinning. "I see you're a hopeless romantic."

Tsk, tsk. He was a lost cause.

"This isn't being a hopeless romantic. My girlfriend said this is a stamp of love! With this lipstick print, all the other single girls will know I'm taken." Skyler's grin widened. "Uncle, I bet you're super jealous right now, aren't you?"

Gordon gave him a deadpan look. "Why would I be jealous of you? What is there to be jealous of?"

What a joke.

"My girlfriend and I just made it official, and she couldn't wait to plant a lipstick print on my white shirt to claim her territory, afraid someone else might snatch me up. What about you? You and Boss Caitlin have been together for so long. Has she ever done this for you?"

"If I had to guess, I'd say Boss Caitlin has never, ever done this for you."

"What can I say? My girlfriend just loves me that much!"

Skyler grew more and more smug. If he had a tail, it would be wagging high in the air by now.

Gordon turned his gaze on Skyler and said, word for word, "Do you think everyone is as childish as you?"
