Kingsley raised an eyebrow, his tone becoming lazy. "Yeah. Since when did you start managing my business trips?"
Bacchus paused on the other end of the line, then decided to stop skirting the issue. "Grandma asked me to check. She's worried you're there to bother Lucy again. Kingsley, the past is in the past, and Harland has paid the price. Don't keep holding on to it—she was innocent from beginning to end."
The word "innocent" hit Kingsley like a small stone, causing a sudden ripple of panic in his chest and tightening his throat. He replied faintly, "I know."
"Good. So when are you coming back?" Bacchus changed the subject, concern entering his voice.
Kingsley suddenly smirked, his tone sharp. "Did she ask you to ask about the necklace again?"
Before Bacchus called, Susan had indeed asked him to urge Kingsley about the necklace's arrival.
"A necklace is more important to her than her son," Kingsley laughed lightly, the sound dripping with sarcasm.
Hearing the dissatisfaction in his voice, Bacchus quickly explained, "She didn't ask; I heard Dad mention it. I'll pay for the necklace."
"With your salary? Enough to buy her a chain? Don't be ridiculous," Kingsley interrupted him, adding, "Save it to buy gifts for my future sister-in-law."
Bacchus took it in stride, joking, "We'll talk about the future later. Who knows, maybe I'll end up being a trophy husband."
Kingsley chuckled, his tone teasing. "Vice Director Sherwood, very ambitious."
What can I say? Limited skills and a weak constitution," Bacchus replied with a perfectly straight face. "I'm built for a life of ease."
Kingsley laughed, waving his hand dismissively. "Fine. Better than finding someone who squanders the family fortune. Hanging up now."
After ending the call, Kingsley looked at the exquisite meal on the table.
Bacchus's words—"She was innocent from beginning to end"—played on loop in his mind. His chest felt suddenly congested, and what little appetite he had vanished completely.
Thirty minutes later, Peter was leaning against the entrance of a bar. Seeing Kingsley approach, he winked conspiratorially. "Your ex-wife's knight in shining armor is inside."
"Has nothing to do with me."
Kingsley didn't stop walking, speaking as if it were someone else's business.
"It has nothing to do with you, sure, but I'm afraid if you two meet, we'll have a 'rivals meeting, eyes red with jealousy' situation."
Peter followed him, still acting unserious.
Kingsley abruptly turned his head, shooting a cold glare that pierced like an ice pick, silently telling him to cut the nonsense.
Peter sensibly shut his mouth and shrugged sheepishly.
