The next day.
Lucy spent the entire morning supervising progress at the construction site.
As she was leaving, she had just stuffed the rolled-up blueprints into the trunk when Kingsley appeared. He was inspecting the nearby construction status.
Seeing Lucy, he strode over on long legs, stopping right in front of her. His tone was level but his words were definitive. "Jules's family situation is complicated. His mother may have climbed the ranks later, but she holds no weight in the Holt family. The old man values the eldest legitimate son above all. A man like him isn't suitable for you."
Lucy looked up, her eyes still holding the chill from the construction site. "What business is it of yours, me and Jules? Kingsley, aren't you overstepping?"
She slammed the trunk shut with a bang.
Kingsley's throat bobbed, his voice lowering. "Maybe I'm sick in the head, but he's not right for you."
"If you're sick, go to a hospital. Don't be an eyesore here." Lucy dropped the remark, opened the driver's door, and revved the engine. The car sped away from the site in the blink of an eye.
Not far away, Xavier watched the car disappear in a cloud of dust, then looked at Kingsley standing rooted to the spot. Suddenly, he understood—he finally grasped why Shane had given him those specific instructions earlier.
Kingsley's gaze remained locked on the direction the car had vanished, his eyes dark.
After a long while, he pulled out his phone, his fingers pausing before sending a message to Ethan: [I think I'm sick.]
The message had barely gone through when Ethan's reply popped up, teasing as usual: [What kind of sickness? Tell me first, let's see if there's any saving you.]
Kingsley ignored it and turned to walk toward his own car.
Xavier quickly stepped forward to open the door, and Kingsley bent to get into the back seat.
Lucy had just sat down at the office when Jules walked over with a file.
He sat in the chair opposite her and placed the file gently on the desk. "Take a look at this when you have time. Produce a design for it."
Lucy picked up the file and flipped through it quickly, her brows furrowing. "This is a project from Department Three? It's a classic hot potato. What are your intentions giving this to me?"
Jules curled his lips, his tone confident. "Because I trust you can design the effect they want. It's a problem for others, but in your hands, it won't be."
"You really think highly of me." Lucy closed the file, tapping her fingers lightly on the cover.
"I never praise people without reason." Jules leaned forward.
