Kingsley tapped his fingertips lightly against the tabletop, a slow, rhythmic sound. His face revealed no emotion, but the hand hanging by his side had clenched into a fist. A sudden impulse surged within him, barely suppressed, urging him to storm over and pull Lucy away from Jules.
Mrs. Lucas was famous for her social agility; she was a veteran in these business settings, incredibly smooth in navigating relationships. Although she vaguely sensed the subtle, turbulent undercurrents between Jules and Kingsley, she didn't let that tension affect the flow of the meal.
When the red wine was served, Mrs. Lucas poured half a glass for Lucy. As soon as she placed it in front of her, Jules interjected.
"Mrs. Lucas, her tolerance for alcohol is quite poor. Today, Mr. Sherwood and I will keep you company drinking."
Mrs. Lucas nodded immediately, turning to Lucy with an apologetic smile. "Sorry, sorry, that was thoughtless of me."
No sooner had the words fallen than Kingsley turned his head and coughed low a few times. He looked at Mrs. Lucas. "I truly apologize, but my cough has been severe these past few days, so I'm afraid I can't drink. However, I've heard Mr. Holt has an incredible capacity. There's no time like the present—I'd love to see it."
Hearing this, Lucy discreetly tugged at Jules's arm and reminded him softly, "Mr. Holt, you have a meeting this afternoon. Have you forgotten?"
Jules turned and smiled at her, his tone unhurried. "I actually did forget. Since Mr. Sherwood is unwell, why don't we have a dedicated drinking session once you've recovered? I've long wanted to see Mr. Sherwood's capacity as well."
Watching Lucy defend Jules at every turn, Kingsley felt his heart instantly fill with a crushing sense of loss. He stared at Jules with eyes so dark and cold they looked ready to devour him whole.
Seeing the standoff, Mrs. Lucas quickly smoothed things over. "Alright, alright. We'll just have a light drink today, nothing heavy."
Then, as the exquisite Western meal was served, Kingsley watched helplessly as Jules cut his steak into neat pieces and attentively pushed the plate in front of Lucy. Kingsley felt a blockage in his chest, his appetite vanishing instantly.
