With a content smile, Estella carefully packed away the chessboard, its pieces clinking softly as she arranged them. “We should get some sleep now. Tomorrow brings more work,” she suggested, her voice light and cheerful.

“Alright,” Jonathan replied, his tone a mixture of agreement and reluctance.

As he slipped off his jacket, Estella instinctively reached for a hanger, a small gesture that felt both intimate and routine. She hung it with care, her fingers brushing against the fabric as if it were a delicate treasure.

Once back in her room, a sudden realization struck her. She had forgotten her phone. With a quick determination, she stepped out to retrieve it. But as she emerged into the living room, she was met with an unexpected sight: Jonathan stood there, his shirt half off, the contours of his lean muscles illuminated by the soft glow of the room.

Estella’s breath caught for a moment. She had seen him in various states of undress before, but never in her own apartment and never so unguarded. It was a glimpse into a side of him that felt strangely intimate.

Jonathan, equally startled, hurriedly tugged his shirt back into place, a faint blush creeping across his cheeks. “I thought… something crawled into my collar. Probably a roach. I’ll go take a shower,” he stammered, his voice a mix of embarrassment and urgency.

Javerton was infamous for its cockroaches, a fact that Estella had come to accept. No matter how meticulously she cleaned her apartment, the city’s nocturnal intruders always seemed to find a way in.

Suppressing a laugh, Estella replied, “I’ll grab you something clean to wear.” She rummaged through her closet and handed him an oversized pajama set she had accidentally purchased. It was comically large, but it would have to suffice.

“Thanks,” he said, his voice slightly muffled as he disappeared into the bathroom.

While he showered, Estella plugged in a small night-light, a whimsical thought crossing her mind that perhaps its gentle glow would ward off any unwelcome creatures with too many legs.

When Jonathan finally emerged, the pajamas hung awkwardly on his tall frame, the fabric swamping him.

Estella couldn’t help but smirk. “If it’s uncomfortable, you know, you could always change at your place.”

He shook his head, a resolute look on his face. “After Isabelle’s tantrum earlier, the others wouldn’t open their doors for me. I doubt they’d even answer if I knocked.”

She understood the unspoken weight behind his words, the tension that had filled the air earlier.

After a moment of silence, she added, “If you leave the night-light on, the bugs won’t dare show themselves.”

“Alright,” he replied, his voice steady, though the faint flush on his ears betrayed him.

This was a first for both of them—sharing a night under the same roof. An unspoken restlessness hung between them, a tension that neither could quite articulate.
