Just as she’d feared. Vivica shot up from her chair, her heart pounding with panic.
“Okay, I’m on my way! Please, you have to stop them! Don’t let them take my son!”
After hanging up, Vivica didn't waste a second. She ran to find Zavier to ask for time off. Seeing the frantic look in her red-rimmed eyes, he approved it without a single question.
...
Back at the hospital, Evelyn, fueled by a fierce, reckless energy, managed to break through the line of staff, still clutching Chaim. The little boy was thrashing in her arms, crying so hard that tears and snot streamed down his face. She paid him no mind, making a mad dash for the elevator.
Sheridan immediately turned to his butler. “Stop her! They don’t look like grandparents; they look like kidnappers!”
Just as Evelyn reached the elevator, the butler intercepted her, swiftly taking the child from her arms.
Evelyn was stunned. She whirled around. “Who are you? Why are you taking my grandson?!”
She lunged to get him back, but several of Sheridan's aides quickly stepped in, surrounding her.
“Who are you people? What right do you have to take my grandson? Zebulon! Zebulon, get over here!”
Outnumbered, Evelyn screamed for her husband.
Melanie’s heart broke seeing the child crying so hysterically. Tears welled in her own eyes. “Quick, let me see him…” she pleaded.
The butler handed the boy to Melanie. She held Chaim, a storm of emotions—excitement, heartache—washing over her. An aide handed her a tissue, and she gently wiped the tears from the boy's face, murmuring softly, “Don’t cry, sweetie, don’t cry. Grandma’s here. No one can hurt you.”
Drawn by his wife’s cries, Zebulon rushed over and began shouting as well. “Where did you come from, you old hag? Let go of my grandson!”
Then, a flicker of recognition crossed his face. “Oh! I remember now! You two were snooping around the room a few days ago! You must be kidnappers trying to steal my grandson!”
“Help! Kidnappers! They’re kidnappers!” he and Evelyn shrieked, creating an even bigger scene.
Just then, an elevator dinged open.
Ruby stepped out and gasped at the sight. “What’s going on?”
A nurse rushed over to her. “They were trying to sneak the child out! We almost couldn’t stop them!”
Understanding dawned on Ruby. She turned to Zebulon and Evelyn and yelled, “So that’s why you sent me downstairs! You wanted to take Chaim away in secret!”
Then, seeing Chaim crying pitifully in a stranger’s arms, she misunderstood and lunged forward, grabbing the boy back. “Who are you?!”
She immediately turned to comfort him. “Chaim, don’t cry… I’m here!”
Seeing a familiar face, Chaim cried even harder, his little arms clinging tightly to Ruby’s neck, his body trembling.
