Zebulon put the phone on speaker. When Evelyn heard “a million dollars,” her eyes lit up.
“A million dollars? Vivica could get her hands on a million dollars today!” she exclaimed, grabbing her husband’s arm. “Let’s go, we have to get to the hospital! We need to corner her and get that money today!”
Zebulon remembered what the police had said—today was the final deadline. If they didn’t reach a settlement, their son was going to jail. Without a second thought, he abandoned all other concerns.
“You bastard, Fletcher, just you wait!” Zebulon muttered a weak threat into the phone before hanging up. He and his wife then rushed out of the house like a whirlwind.
...
Back at the registry office, Fletcher lowered his phone, a flicker of vengeful satisfaction in his eyes. His plan had worked.
Riley looked at him, confused. “Why did you call her parents instead of her?”
“To make her life a living hell, of course,” he sneered.
That was his whole plan—to deliberately let Zebulon and Evelyn know that Vivica was getting a large sum of money today.
“I want to make sure that money doesn’t even have time to warm her hands before it’s snatched away,” he muttered to himself, his face contorted with a cruel, determined expression.
Riley glanced at him, a sudden chill running down her spine. “They say even a one-day marriage creates a bond. After four years, how can you be so ruthless to her?”
Fletcher’s expression immediately softened as he turned to her. “I’m just trying to get back at her for you, to make you happy.”
Riley curved her lips into a smile, her eyes full of charm. “Oh, is that it? Thank you, darling.”
In reality, Fletcher was acting purely out of revenge.
