In a week, I would be gone. The next morning, I went to the hospital as usual. Still, I informed the head of the hospital that I would be leaving.
He looked genuinely regretful and tried to persuade me to stay.
“Is something bothering you at work? Or has something happened?”
“A doctor as capable as you leaving would be a great loss for us.”
My eyes burned, but I still refused.
I loved my job and would continue in this field in the future—just somewhere else.
The head of the hospital had once given me a chance when few others would. I was afraid that if I stayed any longer, I might waver, so I excused myself and left quickly.
When I returned to my office, a familiar figure was already there.
Lila walked in and removed the mask from her face.
“Dr. Shaw, I’d like you to perform the surgery for me.”
It took all my strength to keep my face composed.
“Your husband doesn’t want you to go through with it, Mrs. Holt. I think it’s best to let it go.”
She was an unwitting other woman, and I couldn’t bring myself to blame her. After all, I would be leaving soon.
But Lila grabbed my hand, her eyes pleading.
“Please, Dr. Shaw, help me.”
“You’ve seen how handsome my husband is. He loves me, but every time he wants me, he holds himself back so he won’t hurt me.”
“But as time goes by, I’m afraid another woman might tempt him.”
“We’ve been together for almost a year, and he’s never really let himself go.”
“Last month, I tried to give myself to him completely, but I tore a little. After that, he had to take medication for two weeks just to suppress his desire.”
Lila went on talking, but I could no longer hear a thing.
I clenched my palm, then finally agreed.
As a doctor, I couldn’t refuse a patient’s request—especially since the operation had already been scheduled the day before.
Taking a deep breath, I pushed all emotions aside and focused completely on the procedure.
Everything went smoothly; the surgery was a success.
“Make sure to rest and avoid any strenuous activity, especially intercourse,” I instructed after removing my mask.
After watching her leave, I returned to my work.
Late that night, I was pulled violently out of sleep and thrown to the floor.
My elbow hit the ground hard, and pain shot up my arm.
When I opened my eyes, Adrian was standing there, his face dark with fury.
“What did you do to Lila?”
