The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 331

Ethan was completely obedient, taking whatever she gave him without question.

“You barely ate anything today,” Ramona said, still worried. “Are you not feeling well? No appetite?”

“I’m just not very hungry this late,” he said, avoiding her gaze. He stretched and started to head toward the bedroom to change, but she followed him, a look of suspicion on her face.

“Have you…” She stepped in front of him, stood on her toes, and cupped his face in her hands, studying him closely. His features were sharp and flawless, but his deep-set eyes were shadowed with exhaustion.

“… lost weight?” she asked, tilting her head.

Ethan froze for a second, a wave of tenderness washing over him. He swiftly scooped her up into his arms. As if to prove his strength, he carried her to the bed without breaking a sweat, her soft gasp lost in the air. He lowered her onto the plush mattress, his breath warm on her face.

“Still have doubts? I have plenty of strength left.”

“Don’t,” she said quickly, the image of the lingerie in their suitcase flashing through her mind. She shook her head vigorously. “I believe you. I was so tired today. If we do anything, I’ll never get up tomorrow.”

He had only been teasing her. Seeing the look of a startled rabbit in her eyes, he softened. He leaned over her, his arms braced on either side of her, and gently kissed her lips. “I won’t tease you anymore. Go take a shower. We should get some rest.”

“Okay.”

Her eyes were still locked on his, captivated by the lingering desire she saw there. It took her a moment to break the spell and hurry off to the bathroom. Ethan had a way about him—a commanding presence combined with a raw, addictive sensuality.

After she left, the sound of the shower running filled the quiet room. Ethan sat up, a soft cough escaping his lips. He pressed a hand to his lower abdomen, a dull ache radiating from his stomach.

The pain had woken him up in the middle of the night. A wave of nausea had followed, and he had thrown up a liquid tinged with blood. He remembered the doctor mentioning a shadow on his stomach scan—probably just a bruise that hadn’t healed. But the discomfort was intense.
