The Sickened Luna's Last Chance novel Chapter 315

Lilith’s face fell. “What are you saying?”

“I think…” I took a shaky breath. “I think once Anya becomes Alexander’s Luna, I should leave.”

“Ella, you don’t mean that.

“Anya will make a good Luna.” I shrugged and picked at my quilt. “She’s kind and patient and caring. She’ll be good to Lucien, too. She already said she sees him as family, and family is the most important thing to her. I wouldn’t have to worry about him.”

Lilith remained silent, just watching me with wide eyes. I gulped hard as I fought back another wave of tears. “If stay, I’ll just keep torturing myself,” I went on. “Watching Alexander with his new wife, watching my son call another woman ‘Mama‘ someday. It’ll kill me slowly, and I might slip up. I might tell someone else the truth. I might get angry or bitter or desperate enough to tell Alexander himself.”

“So you’d rather abandon your son?” Lilith whispered.

“I’m not abandoning him. I’ll… I’ll watch from afar. Find a job in town somewhere, maybe. Close enough to see him grow up but far enough that I won’t be tempted to get involved. He’ll never know who I really am,

but at least I’ll know he’s loved and cared for.”

A long silence fell over us then. The only sound was that of the party continuing downstairs, music and laughter and chatter that I couldn’t be a part of.

“If you leave,” she finally said, “I’m going with you.”

“You don’t have to do that…”

“Yes, I do. I’m your mother, Ella. All I ever wanted was to be close to you, to actually be your mother after all those years of watching from a distance. If you go, then I go.”

“We’ll figure it out together,” she murmured, stroking my hair gently. “Whatever you decide, we’ll figure it out. You don’t have to carry this alone.”

Nodding, I closed my eyes and focused on the feeling of her fingers in my hair, the warmth of her lap beneath my head, the sound of her soft voice humming a faint lullaby to drown out the sounds of the banquet

downstairs. Finally, my eyelids began to grow heavy with sleep.

And soon, I drifted off into a much–needed slumber. It was dark and blissfully dreamless.
