Chapter 158
The entire ride to the hospital was a nightmare.
Mia cried. She screamed. She begged the driver to go faster and then cursed him five minutes later for hitting a pothole that inade the pain worse.
Her hands clenched the side of the seat as her brother Ethan tried to calm her down, his own face pale with panic.
“Breathe, Mia, just breathe,” he kept saying, but even he knew it was useless.
“I am breathing, you idiot!” she shouted back, then burst into tears again.
No amount of preparation had prepared her enough for the real thing. The birthing classes? A joke. The videos she’d watched online? Useless. The pamphlet they gave her at the clinic? Might as well have been toilet paper.
Nothing…absolutely nothing-could have described what she is feeling now.
Pain. Pressure. Panic.
Mia saw and un-saw stars. She cried out for Alex in her most vulnerable moment. It was instinct. She wasn’t even thinking. But the name tore out of her throat like a prayer, a cry for help.
Alex.
Even though he wasn’t here…
Even though he is married now…
Even though he might have had a hand in what his father did to her family….
Her mind didn’t care. Her heart didn’t either.
All she wanted right now was for this pain to stop. For her baby to be okay.
When they finally got to the hospital, Ethan ran inside like a lunatic yelling, “My sister’s having a baby!” as if the nurses couldn’t already hear Mia’s screams from the parking lot.
They rushed her in.
Bright lights. Cold air. People talking fast. Someone putting something on her belly. Another asking her a thousand questions. Was she allergic to anything? When did her water break? How far apart were her contractions?
She couldn’t answer. All she could do was scream.
She grabbed Ethan’s shirt, digging her nails into his arm. “If I die, tell my baby I love them,” she whispered.
“You’re not dying!” Ethan shouted back, clearly terrified. “You’re giving birth!”
“I’m dying!”
She definitely felt like she was.
They rushed into another room and all Mia could hear are voices telling her to push

Chapter 158
“Almost there, almost there”
It was all too much. She’s gonna die.
But then… she heard it.
The cry.
That tiny, beautiful, perfect sound that cut through all the chaos and pain.
Mia froze. Her breath hitched. The tears that were already falling turned into something else-something deeper.
A sob of joy.
She felt her entire world shift in that moment.
“It’s a boy,” one of the nurses said with a huge smile.
A boy.
Mia had wanted the gender to be a surprise. And now it was. A beautiful, unexpected surprise.
Her lips parted but no words came out. Instead, some weird sound escaped her throat…a mix between laughing and crying. It was ugly and messy and loud, but she didn’t care.
She was staring at her baby.
Her baby.
Her little miracle.
Tears fell down her cheeks as she reached out, begging to hold him. She was still shaking, her body weak, but when they placed him in her arms…even just for a moment…everything stopped.
The world went quiet.
The pain faded.
It was just her and her baby.
She stared down at his tiny face, his scrunched-up nose, his little fists waving in the air. He was still a little messy from birth, but to Mia, he was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen.
She smiled so wide it hurt. Her heart felt like it was going to explode..
She cried harder.
Tears and sweat and exhaustion all mixed together, but none of it mattered.
Because this… this was everything.
This little person was hers.
Her son..
Her baby.
