Max glanced at the nanny. “What’s Anne up to?”

The nanny answered, “Evelynn’s with her. They’re napping.”

Max headed to the door. He grabbed the handle, careful not to make a sound, and eased it open.

Inside, he saw them on the hospital bed, curled up together in sleep. Felicia lay on her side, cradling Anne. Anne was nestled close, her tiny fists tucked under her chin, her cheeks rosy and relaxed.

From here, their profiles looked so much alike, just one bigger, one smaller.

Max stood quietly at the doorway, his gaze steady and unreadable.

Felicia stirred, half-awake. She shifted, then froze when she realized Anne was still asleep, snuggled in her arms. Looking down at her daughter’s sweet face, Felicia couldn’t help but lean in for a gentle kiss.

She carefully slid her arm out from under Anne, sat up, and pulled back the blanket, getting ready to go to the bathroom. Just as she turned, she spotted a man sitting silently on the sofa.

Felicia’s eyes flew wide. Her heart skipped a beat.

“You…”

The word almost slipped out, but she caught herself.

She frowned. When did he get here?

Max looked up from his phone, his dark eyes fixed on her. It was obvious he already knew she’d slapped Andrea.

Neither of them spoke. The silence was thick with everything left unsaid.

Felicia set her feet on the floor, slipped into her slippers, and turned to tuck the blanket around Anne before heading to the bathroom.

She came out a moment later, fully awake.

Max glanced at her and spoke quietly. “Come out here for a minute.”

Felicia watched his back as he walked away. She’d known he’d come after her once she slapped Andrea. Honestly, she wasn’t scared.

She followed him out of the room.

Max told the nanny to go inside and stay with Anne.
