She remembered being drugged. Now, though, she was lying here in bed with Anne, safe and sound. Aside from a bit of lingering dizziness, her body felt fine. She wasn’t sure what had happened while she was out, but Felicia was pretty sure it was Max who brought her back. She didn’t think too much about it. For now, she just hugged Anne tightly, holding her close as the sky slowly lightened outside.

Anne started to wake up, rubbing her eyes. When she saw Evelynn watching her, she gave a sleepy little smile. “Good morning.”

Felicia brushed Anne’s messy hair back and kissed her on the forehead. “Good morning, sweetheart.”

Anne perked up right away, lifting her little face and planting a loud kiss on Felicia’s cheek. The two of them stayed curled up together, not in any hurry to leave the warmth of the bed.

“You fainted last night. Daddy carried you home,” Anne said.

Just as she thought. It had been Max. So he saved her. Felicia didn’t need much imagination to figure out who was behind what happened last night, and she guessed Max probably had his own suspicions too.

The door creaked open. Felicia looked up and saw Max walk in. He glanced at her.

“Daddy!” Anne scrambled off the bed, stepping over the soft blankets and reaching out her arms. Max came over, picked her up, and tossed her gently into the air a couple of times. Anne’s laughter filled the whole room, bright and happy.

Max gazed at his daughter with so much warmth in his eyes it almost hurt to watch. Felicia leaned back against the headboard, taking it all in.

“Alright, that’s enough,” Max said, setting Anne down. “Time to wash up and get some breakfast.”

Anne ran back over and cuddled into Felicia’s arms. “Evelynn, are we getting up now?”

Felicia stroked her hair. “Get ready with daddy first. I’m going to rest a little longer.”

She could still feel the effects of the drug; her head was a little heavy and slow.

“Then I’ll stay with you,” Anne mumbled.
