Theresa stood in the dim light of the courtyard, her gaze fixed firmly on the obstinate Professor K. She could feel the weight of his resolve, as unyielding as granite. There was a stubbornness about him that was practically palpable; no amount of persuasion seemed capable of moving him. Even the most enticing dog pot stew wouldn’t make him budge an inch, so she decided it was best to stop her attempts altogether.

With a resigned sigh, she picked up a hefty chunk of meat, wrapping it carefully before fastening it around the dog’s neck. “Alright, you two can head back now,” she declared, her voice firm yet affectionate.

“Woof woof!” The dog danced excitedly around her feet, the meat swinging from his neck like a prize. His tail wagged furiously, as if he had just found his new favorite human in the world.

Theresa had always had a special connection with dogs. It was as if they could sense her kindness, regardless of their size or breed; they flocked to her with an instinctual trust.

Turning her attention back to the task at hand, she instructed Elias to drive Professor K home. “And while you’re at it, make sure to log in a few of the new residents in town,” she added casually, knowing it was a necessary chore.

Once they departed, she surveyed her loyal crew standing guard both inside and outside the courtyard. A wave of satisfaction washed over her as she raised her hand high, signaling a round of rewards.

“Everyone gets a thousand points, along with 50 pounds of pork tickets and 100 pounds of grain tickets!” Her voice rang out, and the atmosphere shifted with excitement.

At home, the dogs were in for a treat as well, feasting on meals that surpassed even the offerings for Professor K’s pet that day.

Her people always came first; she made sure they were well taken care of. Guests, however, never ranked higher than her own.

The mood in the bunker shifted dramatically when news broke that Tania had woken up safely. A collective sigh of relief swept through the crowd, tension melting from their faces like snow under the sun.

“Theresa, does this mean we won’t have to deal with the Starborn Order anymore?” Kyle approached her, his voice tinged with hope.

“Of course not. Who cares about them?” Theresa replied, her tone dismissive. She felt liberated; their scheming no longer held any power over her.

Her focus was now solely on building her own camp, determined not to let the Starborn Order dictate her life any longer. Yet, she couldn’t entirely ignore their existence either.

With a quick glance at Kyle, she instructed, “Tell Bennie to come find me.”

“Yes, right away!” Kyle’s face broke into a wide grin.

As long as Theresa was at home, he felt a weight lift off his shoulders. Whenever she ventured out, a knot of worry tightened in his stomach. The worst part was that she seldom took him along.

If she could stay put, his happiness would know no bounds.

About half an hour later, the bunker buzzed back to life as the kitchen sprang into action. Tyger, Landon, and the others busily washed vegetables and began preparing the feast.

Since Theresa was dining at home that night, she encouraged them to pull out all the stops. “Fresh fish, chicken, shrimp—whatever you can find!” she exclaimed, her excitement palpable. The bunker hadn’t felt this warm and lively in ages.

Since taking control of the city, she had rarely enjoyed a meal at home. Most days, she settled for boxed meals prepared by the city’s chefs. While they were fresh, nothing could compare to the comfort of a home-cooked meal.

One dish after another arrived at the table: garlic butter shrimp, chicken and mushroom stew, baked fish seasoned with herbs, and roasted pork ribs kissed with garlic. Fresh zucchini, cauliflower, tender baby greens, and scrambled eggs with tomatoes from her greenhouse rounded out the spread.
