Bennie glanced at her, hesitating for a moment before he finally spoke. “The Starborn Order sent a message Apparently, everything so far was just a warmup.”

Theresa listened in silence. She stood atop the city wall, her gaze fixed on the mounds of bodies and the few zombies still writhing and snarling below. She clamped a cigarette between her teeth.

When the lighter’s flame sparked at her fingertip, its flame trembled gently.

She tried several times, but the cigarette refused to light.

She was utterly drained. Ever since her encounter with Decision Maker Three, she hadn’t slept–not once.

Days had passed with her eyes wide open, her sclera streaked red.

Seeing her like that, Bennie suddenly realized she was human after all.

She was just a young woman.

In the world before the apocalypse, someone her age would’ve been dating, hanging out with friends, throwing harmless tantrums, and crying to her family–who would’ve immediately rallied behind her.

But Theresa carried the entire world on her own. She handled everything alone.

No matter what hit her, Bennie had never once seen her break. Not a single tear.

He had almost convinced himself she was made of steel–untouchable. He had truly forgotten she was much younger than he was.

A strange ache hit him in the chest, a tangle of emotions he couldn’t name.

289 camps were obliterated. The three Ark Camps and the Blazing Sun Alliance had all been crushed by the zombie tide.

It was unimaginable for anyone, let alone a young woman, to bear the weight of all that.

“T–Theresa,” Bennie stammered as he grabbed her lighter and pulled the cigarette from her mouth. “You’ve already done more than anyone could. Maybe this was always humanity’s destination. Let’s just… walk away.”

Theresa slowly turned toward him, her bloodshot eyes hard to read.

She raised her hand and tapped the top of his head–a weak, flimsy slap with no force behind it. “D*mn it. You’re a man who’s been useless his entire life.”

Bennie remained silent.

He ignored the insult. “I’ve calculated it. If we all move to Ark Camp One and build a subterranean system, we could survive underground.”

Theresa let out a dry laugh. “Hide like rats? Living without ever seeing the sun again?”

“Theresa, you can insult me however you want,” Bennie said, meeting her gaze.

Theresa’s laugh deepened. She stared at Bennie, who had lowered his head but looked completely seriou “Bennie, how do you imagine we live like that?

“The Starborn Order wants to establish a zombie nation–a zombie civilization. They’re planning to wipe out every living human. If we hide underground, how long do you think we can last? A day? Ten? Maybe t weeks?”

“That still counts as living,” Bennie muttered.

Theresa snatched her lighter and cigarette back. This time the spark caught, and the flame held.

“Hiding is just another way of dying. Charging in gets us killed too. If death’s the only ending, then I’m going out in a blaze. And I’m taking the whole d*mn Starborn Order with me. ‘Coward‘ isn’t even in my vocabulary.”

She inhaled sharply from the cigarette and strode off. Watching her back, Bennie felt panic slam through his chest.

“Then what’s the strategy? What can we even fight them with right now?”

“Tell the Starborn Order,” Theresa said, not bothering to turn. “They stop all operations for three days and send a plane for me on the third. If they refuse, I’ll take myself out.”

She was wagering that they needed her alive..

At the very least, they’d prefer her zombified to her corpse being worthless.

The board was set; every card was visible.

There was no path left for retreat. Between the viral ambush and the global zombie surge, humanity had reached its final standoff.
