In an instant, clarity washed over Theresa as she pieced everything together.

“I should have seen it coming,” she muttered, her voice laced with disbelief. “They dress it up as human evolution, but it’s nothing but a sham. All they want is to bolster their own power!”

“Exactly,” replied the man clad in a crisp white coat, his expression grim. “The higher-ups in the Starborn Order have lost their minds. They’re all hooked on the potency that the zombie virus provides. They tout it as a new civilization overthrowing the old, but in reality, it’s merely a quest to transform themselves into the most formidable beings.”

“Don’t they fear becoming zombies themselves?” she inquired, a hint of incredulity in her tone.

“They crave god-like power,” he said simply, as if that explained everything.

A chill crept into Theresa’s gaze, her heart hardening at the thought.

How utterly outrageous! The idea of them thinking they could play god infuriated her. She could envision a thousand deaths for them, and none would suffice to quell the seething hatred boiling within her.

Just then, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed from outside the door, snapping her from her thoughts.

“Theresa!” Sage’s voice rang out, urgent and filled with concern.

The surveillance feed had been severed by the Torchbearers, leaving the image of Theresa frozen on the screen, a mere ghost in the machine.

Even someone as oblivious as Sage had finally grasped that something was amiss after ten long minutes.

He rushed to her aid, his heart pounding with worry.

When Theresa spotted Sage rushing toward her, she quickly glanced at the other three men in the room. “Get to the bathroom, now!” she commanded, urgency threading through her voice.

With a swift motion, she pushed the men and their equipment toward the bathroom, her instincts kicking in. She turned on the shower, letting the sound of cascading water fill the air, drowning out any potential noise.

Moments later, Sage burst through the door, a group of people trailing closely behind him.

“Theresa!” he shouted, his voice filled with relief, only to find the living area void of life.

The only sound that greeted him was the relentless rush of water from the bathroom.

Without a moment’s hesitation, he made a beeline for it. Just as his hand reached for the doorknob, the door swung open abruptly.

Theresa emerged, wrapped in a bath towel, her shower cap perched atop her head, giving her an air of casual defiance.

“What’s going on?” she asked, her arms crossed defiantly over her chest.

Sage’s breath hitched in his throat as he took in her appearance, relief flooding through him. “Are you alright?”

“What could possibly be wrong with me?” she replied, feigning innocence.

“The surveillance in your room went dark, so I came to check on you,” he explained, concern still etched on his face.

Theresa leaned back slightly, a sly smile creeping onto her lips. “I see. So when do you plan on leaving?”
