Danielle nodded and ended the call.

She glanced at the gift box by her feet, a mix of emotions swirling inside her. She had no idea what Alexander was up to, why he was shouldering all this danger alone, or if there would ever be a day they could clear the air between them.

She had barely stepped into her office when her assistant, Larkin, hurried in with a file, his voice tense. “Chief Engineer Crawford, Mr. Davidson from Vanguard Technologies is here. He’s waiting in the conference room and says he needs to discuss the resource allocation for the project with you.”

Danielle’s hand paused on her mouse, her brow furrowing. “Nathan? Why is he here himself? Weren’t the assistants supposed to handle this?”

“He said the matter is too important and that he had to speak with you personally. He also mentioned it involves resources that require coordination with the President of The Davidson Guild, and it would be best if you handled it.”

Larkin handed her the file. “This is the proposal he brought. You should take a look.”

Danielle took the file and flipped through a few pages. She saw that it did, in fact, mention the supply of several core components that needed to be coordinated through the aerospace guild—a guild whose president was Alexander.

She understood immediately. Nathan was doing this on purpose.

He knew she wanted nothing to do with Alexander, so he was using “guild resources” as a pretext to force her hand.

“I understand. I’m on my way,” Danielle said, closing the file. She straightened her collar, took a deep breath, and walked toward the conference room.

Running from this wouldn’t solve anything. She had to face it head-on.
