With that, she stood, picked up the file from the table, and walked out.
The conference room door clicked shut, cutting off Nathan’s glare. Danielle had just let out a breath of relief when she turned and saw Dean Channing standing at the end of the hallway.
The old dean was holding a ceramic mug with a few tea leaves still clinging to the rim. Seeing her, he gave a gentle wave. “Chief Engineer Crawford, could you join me in my office for a moment?”
A knot formed in Danielle’s stomach as she followed him inside.
Dean Channing poured her a cup of hot water before speaking slowly. “I overheard a bit of a commotion out there. Nathan wasn’t giving you a hard time, was he?”
Danielle shook her head, her fingers tightening around the warm cup, but she didn’t say anything.
She knew what he was going to ask. Her history with Alexander was hardly a secret in Northridge City’s tech community, so it wasn’t surprising that the dean knew.
Sure enough, Dean Channing sighed, his gaze drifting to the window. “I’ve heard a little about what happened between you and Alexander.”
“Your divorce… was it because you two truly fell out of love, or was there something else going on?”
Danielle looked down at the steam rising from her cup, her lips pressed together.
All the tangled history, the unspoken misunderstandings… she didn’t know where to begin.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to pry into your personal life,” Dean Channing clarified quickly, his tone becoming more reflective. “I met Alexander a few times at industry conferences years ago.”
“He was a brilliant young mind in the aerospace field back then. He studied under Academician Gresham and had an incredibly promising future. Such a shame…”
Danielle’s head snapped up. “Academician Gresham?”
“Yes, Miles Gresham. He was one of the pioneers involved in the early satellite development program,” the dean said, his voice growing heavier. “That year, Academician Gresham was in an accident on a ship during a business trip. They never even found his body.”
“Not long after that, Alex suddenly switched to the business world. I heard his family forced him into an arranged marriage, which is why he gave up his research.”
In fact, for that first year, they had been wonderful together.
He never spoke of Academician Gresham or complained about the arranged marriage. He just shouldered it all silently, even cloaking his affection for her in a clumsy disguise.
Dean Channing looked surprised for a moment, then a knowing smile touched his lips. “It seems I was mistaken.”
“That boy has always kept his feelings buried deep. If he hadn’t given up his research back then, he might be working right here alongside you in the aerospace field today.”
Danielle stared into her cup as the water slowly cooled, her heart aching with a newfound understanding.
Alexander’s past was far heavier than she had ever imagined.
Behind all the moments she had interpreted as him “not caring” lay a quiet endurance she had never known.
She stood up and bowed to the dean. “Thank you for telling me all this. I should get back to the project now.”

I knew it! He’s in love with her but he thinks she loves his brother!...
Oh poor Bianca... regrets, regrets :)...
This is it! Revenge. Way to go Dani....
OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
I hope not a lot of important dialogues get cut out, especially between Danielle and Alexander. But I can't complain, really. Thank you again for the updates....
