When Danielle returned from the kitchen with a bowl of hot soup, she found him asleep on the sofa.

She stopped, quietly set the bowl down, and walked over to him. Looking at his pale, exhausted face, she felt a familiar ache in her heart. She reached out, intending to smooth the worry lines from his brow, but her hand froze mid-air. Remembering the new distance between them, she slowly pulled it back, afraid to disturb his rare moment of peace.

She went to the bedroom, retrieved a light blanket, and carefully draped it over him. She knelt by the sofa for a moment, just watching him, before turning to clear the table.

Just then, the bedroom door creaked open, and a small figure peeked out. Niki, in her pink bear pajamas, rubbed her sleepy eyes, her hair tousled. The sounds from the living room had woken her.

Her eyes lit up when she saw Alexander on the sofa, but her excitement quickly turned to concern. She tiptoed over, her little brow furrowed in a serious expression. She reached out a tiny hand and gently touched his arm before quickly snatching it back, as if afraid of waking him.

Danielle hurried to her daughter’s side and knelt. “What’s wrong, sweetie? Did Mommy wake you?”

Niki shook her head, her gaze still fixed on Alexander. “Mommy,” she whispered, “what’s wrong with Daddy?”

“Daddy’s just very tired, so he fell asleep.”

Niki blinked, taking in her father’s pale face and tense expression. “He looks like he’s hurting,” she said quietly. “Is he sick?”

Danielle closed her laptop and walked over to him, her tone casual. “You’re awake. How are you feeling? Do you hurt anywhere?”

She started to raise her hand to check his forehead, but paused, remembering their new reality. She let her hand fall back to her side.

He looked at her, his expression unreadable. “Danielle,” he said, his voice low. “I think we should keep our distance. For a while.”
