"Grandma, don't worry. Let me win over the person I like, then I'll come back to inherit the position of head of the family. What do you think?" Hunter tried to ease the tension, not wanting Nancy to stay angry.
Nancy gave a cold snort. "You're not trying to trick me, are you?"
Her cloudy eyes carried a chilling sharpness. "I know you've always disliked the position of family head. That's why you never wanted to get involved with it. But this position was personally designated to you by your grandfather before he passed. No one other than you can take it."
Nancy said in a serious tone, "Hunter, I'm getting old now. I don't have much time left. Before I close my eyes for good, I must hand the Haberkorn family to you…"
Hunter nodded. At that moment, the sound of something shattering came from outside the door. Nancy's expression darkened as Hunter went to open the door, finding a staff member outside holding desserts.
She had accidentally broken a teacup. When Hunter came out, she quickly lowered her head and apologized, "I'm sorry, Mr. Hanberkorn, I accidentally dropped the custard the chef made."
Hunter frowned slightly, but didn't scold her. Instead, he said coolly," Clean it up quickly."
She looked deeply grateful for his response.
…
At the Cobalt Club villa, Noelle got out of the car after three consecutive races. The crowd that was gathered nearby all wore expressions of disbelief.
Noelle and Lola had raced three rounds in total.
In the first round, Noelle deliberately held back, letting Lola win. So, Lola instantly swelled with pride.
But in the following two rounds, Noelle won effortlessly.
When Noelle got out of the car, the people who had been celebrating Lola's win were all frozen in place.
"Quake actually lost again? How's that possible?"
Wilson's eyes widened as he looked at Noelle. "Lucy, are you really just a racing enthusiast? You even beat Quake!"
Noelle shrugged nonchalantly, "Of course, I am."
Wilson thought it over. If Lucy had ever joined an official race, there was no way he wouldn't remember her. After all, it was impossible to forget such a beautiful face.
But what he couldn't figure out was why the famous Quake lost so miserably in the last two rounds.
Anyone could see that Lucy's racing skills completely crushed Quake.
Since Noelle didn't back down, Lola was forced to smile awkwardly. "I'll naturally stand by what I say. Otherwise, what kind of person would that make me? It's just a team, it's no big deal for me."
But Lola was actually hurting inside.
Lola had tried to persuade Clifford for ages before he finally agreed to sponsor the team. Though the team hadn't started making a profit yet, it was still a legitimate team that could enter competitions.
And now she'd had to hand it over just like that. Clifford would be furious if he found out.
Lola had already realized that Clifford wasn't much compared to the people in front of her.
She needed to cut her losses and seize this chance to find an even better backer.
With that thought, she forced herself to calm down and said to Noelle, "After the event ends, Ms. Lucy can go back to the team with me to sign the contract. The team is doing an autumn camp activity right now, so you could join too, Ms. Lucy."
Noelle smiled faintly at Lola's stubborn facade. "Then I'll have to thank you for this gift, Quake. But I can give up on this bet if it's making things hard for you."
A mere racing team wasn't worth much to Noelle. She only wanted to use this chance to spite Lola.
Lola was tempted, but in front of everyone, she forced herself to say, "Don't worry, I'm someone who always keeps my word. Once I make a promise, I never take it back."
