Children rarely woke easily once they fell into a deep, exhausted sleep. After Noelle was done with baking the cake and noticed Bonnie was still soundly asleep, she didn't wake the latter up.
Instead of leaving, she continued baking more pastries. She'd never go back on her word and leave since she'd promised Bonnie.
By the next morning, the well-rested Bonnie woke up, rubbing her sleepy eyes. The first thing she did right after waking up was to search for Noelle.
As she climbed out of bed, she realized that Noelle was lying right beside her, looking calm and peacefully asleep.
Bonnie nearly hopped up for joy on the bed. Noelle had slept with her and hadn't left, and most importantly, she'd kept her promise!
Though overjoyed, Bonnie carefully climbed out of bed, afraid of waking Noelle up. She washed up in the bathroom before picking out her clothes. Since she wanted to go for a casual look today, she chose a T-shirt and jeans.
After changing into the clothes, she ran off to Hunter.
Downstairs, she found Hunter awake and at work. He looked up when he noticed her and smiled. "Good morning, munchkin. Are you hungry?"
Bonnie had been sleeping since last night without eating anything, so her stomach had been growling for some time.
Still, she didn't want to eat breakfast right now and pouted. "Mommy hasn't woken up, Daddy. Can we wait and have breakfast together after she wakes up?"
Amused by her expression, Hunter gently flicked her nose. "She got you a little surprise last night. Would you like to check out the fridge?"
At that, Bonnie eagerly rushed to the fridge. Since she wasn't tall enough, she scrambled for a stool and stood on it to pull the door open.
As soon as she opened it, she gasped. Rows of sealed chocolate puff pastries, cookies, and cupcakes lined the shelves. There weren't too many cupcakes, though, since they spoiled quickly. But the cookies and chocolate puff pastries came in different shapes, including bears and stars.
Her eyes sparkled as she turned to Hunter. "Did Mommy make these?"
Hunter nodded, and his eyes were full of warmth. "Do you like them?"
"I do! I really love them!" she squealed, nearly jumping in place from joy. She was thrilled that Noelle had made so many pastries for her, and Noelle was the best!
Eagerly, she took out a piece of cupcake, while Hunter warmed her a glass of milk in the microwave and reminded her. "Just one piece. We can enjoy the rest after Mommy wakes up."
Of course, Bonnie had to agree immediately. She nodded and took a bite of the cupcake.
The soft, fluffy texture was incredible, and it wasn't too sweet like anything she'd ever had from a bakery. Noelle's cupcake was just right.
…
The disheartened Clifford slept until noon. Yesterday, he'd thought about meeting Noelle, only to learn that she'd gone to the amusement park with Hunter and Bonnie.
He recalled all the times she'd talked about taking Zayne to the amusement park when he had time.
Back when, she'd always been so delighted and full of anticipation whenever she talked about their future. But he'd always brushed her off and claimed to be busy at work, and that they could go some other time.
By the time Zayne turned five, their family had never once set foot in the amusement park together.
Watching Noelle, Hunter, and Bonnie get along like an intimate family of three filled Clifford with endless pain and regret. Now that she had a new man and child by her side, would she ever come back to him?
Just then, his phone rang. He hadn't wanted to pick it up, but the ringing wouldn't stop.
When he impatiently answered the call, a cold, eerie woman's voice sounded through the line. "Clifford, are you happy with living like a failure forever?"
His body went rigid, before his gaze turned cold and deep. "Who are you? And what do you want?"
