Chapter 82 Anything Is Possible

Their only connection besides work was Madeline.

Just thinking about that snake made Beatrice’s skin crawl.

What game was she playing now? Was there really no way to lock her up for good?

Violet had explained that with the current evidence, they could only charge Madeline as an accomplice to kidnapping. But add the assault and attempted murder charges, and even the Fairfax family’s expensive lawyers shouldn’t be able to save her from at least 15 years in prison.

And yet, Madeline had no intention of spending even a single day in prison.

Beatrice had thought Damian wouldn’t let the Fairfax family exploit the law like this, but it seemed he was letting them have their way. Not that she had any right to expect anything from him. He had his own reasons. She let out a quiet sigh.

From the back seat, Damian glanced over. Seeing her looking so drained, he frowned slightly.

What is she thinking about?

If Damian had known what was on Beatrice’s mind, he wouldn’t have hesitated to tell her that leaving Madeline alone wasn’t a matter of being unable to deal with her. Letting her roam free for now was a step toward sending her somewhere far worse.

“Who’s coming with me next Wednesday?”

His deep voice pulled Beatrice from her thoughts.

Killian checked the rearview mirror, observing his boss’s expression.

“I should stay at the office,” Beatrice jumped in. “Still have a lot to learn.”

“Fine by me. I’ll go,” Killian offered.

They thought it was settled until Damian spoke from the backseat. “Ms. Lawson will attend.”

Neither Beatrice nor Killian dared speak.

“It’s just a social event, not much work to do.” Damian added smoothly. “Perfect for someone learning the ropes. Wouldn’t you agree, Ms. Lawson?”

Beatrice was speedless. She wondered if Damian was implying she was just therefordecoration.

And if Damian had aliudy decided she was going, why had he bothered asking her and Kiilin just now? Ele could have just ordered them outright.

Damian, who had been resting with his eyes closed, opened them at the sudden movement. “Killian, did you have a drink earlier?”

Killian stammered, “No. No way, how could I? There was a rock in the road.”

He chuckled awkwardly as he snuck another glance at the passenger seat.

It was nearly one by the time they got back to the office.

As usual, Damian went to the lounge for a nap.

Beatrice and Killian stepped out of his office.

“Killian, in a bit…”

“I’ll go wake him.” Before Beatrice could even finish, Killian cut in immediately.

Beatrice paused for a second before flashing a bright, pleased smile. “Great! If you get too busy with other things, just leave it all to me. I’ll handle it.”

Killian replied, “Great.”

With a spring in her step, Beatrice headed toward her office.

Killian watched her disappear down the hall, feeling a twinge of pity. Maybe he was reading too much into it–Damian wasn’t exactly the romantic type. Then again, even someone like Damian had to have a heart under all that ice, right?

Beatrice had no idea what was running through Killian’s head.

Over the next week, work went smoothly.

Beatrice quickly grasped the key personnel structure of the headquarters and branch offices, familiarized herself with the major and minor projects that had been in progress over the past year, and established good working relationships with

To speed up the familiarization process, Beatrice took advantage. of lunch breaks and after–work hours to treat the entire secretarial team to several meals. Since she relied on them daily, having them on her side was crucial.

On her first day, they had been a little wary of her. A few days later, they started to show her respect and even brought her coffee without being asked.

Best of all, Killian wasn’t making her wake Damian up from his afternoon naps. He’d also started volunteering to get her morning coffee and high tea.

Killian was turning out to be a great partner. All that worrying had been for nothing.

On Wednesday, Beatrice was headed out of town with Damian –just a quick overnight business trip. They’d leave first thing in the morning and be back the next day.

Tuesday night found her packing while Violet sprawled across her bed, clutching a pillow and grinning like a Cheshire cat.

“Overnight trip with just you two?” Violet wiggled her eyebrows. “Girl, this is your chance!”

Beatrice smacked a shirt over her face. “What chance? I’m going there for work.”

Violet pulled the shirt down. “You could also, you know, ‘seize something else. Locking up your heart doesn’t mean your body. has to suffer. Sex is actually good for your health. Might even help you live longer.”

Beatrice burst out laughing. “What, you think he’s the top host at some escort club? Just toss ten grand on his face, and he’ll obediently lie down for you to do as you please?”
