No mother could ever truly let go of the pain in her heart.
The elderly Mrs. Cooper always forced a brave smile in front of Nora, and that alone made Nora acutely aware of the depth of her grandmother’s love and devotion.
But Nora could see the exhaustion in her, the sorrow she tried so hard to suppress—and it worried her.
Suddenly, Mrs. Cooper’s eyes reddened, tears threatening to fall.
She never expected Nora would notice.
Nora pressed her lips together, then gently said, “Grandma, you can always lean on me.”
That was all it took. Mrs. Cooper broke down and pulled Nora into her arms, weeping openly.
“Aurora, you truly are my precious granddaughter.”
Nora softly patted her grandmother’s shoulder and let her cry it out.
It was better to let the pain pour out than to bottle it up inside.
It was a long while before Mrs. Cooper’s sobs finally subsided.
“Aurora, you must think me ridiculous,” she said, dabbing her tears away.
Nora handed her a tissue and wiped the last of the tears from her grandmother’s cheek. “There’s nothing ridiculous about it. It’s human.”
Mrs. Cooper squeezed her hand, moved once again by Nora’s warmth. She asked Nora to tell her more about her life—she knew some from her own investigations, but she wanted to hear it in Nora’s own words.
So Nora told her everything, from growing up in a group home, to running away, to being taken in by her foster mother.
Mrs. Cooper listened with her heart in her throat. If it hadn’t been for Grandma Grace and Susan, who knows where her Aurora might have ended up?
“I recall that Eleanor is the Quinn family’s daughter, isn’t she?” Mrs. Cooper said, wanting to find some way to make things right.
Nora didn’t hold back—she recounted everything Eleanor had done, down to the last detail.
Mrs. Cooper’s frown deepened with each word. This Eleanor was truly malicious.
“How could he marry someone like that?”
Nora gave a bitter, wry smile. “Probably because of me.”
Some things were clear enough once you thought about them.
Mrs. Cooper was quick to say, “He’s your brother—it’s his responsibility.”
