“Julian, why? Why would you do this? Why would you kill your own child?” Madeline curled up, hugging herself as a fierce pain tore through her belly. She could feel a warm rush between her legs, her vision swimming from the agony. Not long ago, Julian Grayson had forced her to swallow an abortion pill. Now, he sat right next to her bed, his fingers icy as they gripped her chin, his eyes cold and unfeeling as he watched her fall apart.
“Madeline, I’m just giving you exactly what you gave Helene. Tell me, how does it feel, losing your baby bit by bit? Is it as satisfying as you thought?”
She was ghost-pale, trembling and whimpering, her hand feebly trying to pull his away. “I told you, I never hurt her child. How many times do I have to say it? What do you want from me?”
He only tightened his hold, his voice even icier. “We've caught the person who did it, and they said you planned everything. Are you really going to keep lying? Helene’s baby was already eight months, and now it’s dead. How could you bring yourself to do that?”
Madeline’s lips quivered. The pain in her heart was sharper than anything she felt in her body. She’d tried to explain to Julian over and over, but he never listened, never believed her. Then, out of nowhere, divorce papers landed on her lap, tossed at her like garbage.
“Sign them.”
Abortion. Divorce.
From the moment he’d decided she was guilty, she knew this day would come. She’d imagined a thousand ways Julian might hurt her, but she never thought he’d actually take her child’s life. This was his own baby too.
Barely able to stand, Madeline pressed a shaking hand to her swollen belly and used the nightstand to steady herself. She clutched the divorce papers, her eyes burning as she stared at Julian. “Fine, I’ll sign them. You don’t believe me, and you want to avenge Helene. Fine, do what you want. You’re too blind to see the truth, and I can’t change your mind. But this child… this child is yours too. Did you ask me, or Mom, or Grandpa before you did this? You’re willing to kill your own child. You’re a monster.”
Julian stared back at her, his dark eyes hard as stone. The air between them felt like it was freezing over. He glanced at her belly, then gave a cold, mocking smile.
