Julian’s eyes flickered with guilt, but he didn’t try to explain. “Yes.”
The sharp crack of a slap echoed in the air. Julian froze, stunned, before a burning pain shot across his cheek. Madeline, fighting through the agony twisting in her belly, had put every ounce of strength into that slap.
How could he be so heartless? She was his wife, and after this horrible thing happened to her, he just did nothing. Was Helene really that important to him? Important enough that he’d throw away his own pride?
“Julian, do you even believe in karma? Helene lost her baby, and that was her fate catching up to her! You’re going to get what’s coming to you, too!” Madeline’s voice was raw with anger.
Julian’s eyes flared with rage. He stormed over, pinning her against the wall, his hand closing hard around her throat.
“Say that again. When I was in a coma, it was you who schemed to get Helene out of the picture and become my wife. You basically forced Helena to do this.”
Did he really believe that?
Back then, after his car accident left him with kidney failure, she donated her kidney to save him. As thanks, his grandfather Christian agreed to their marriage, but only if she never told Julian about the transplant. Helene, who was supposed to marry Julian, broke off the engagement the moment she heard he might be left in a coma and ran off overseas.
A cold emptiness filled Madeline’s eyes. She reached up, finger by finger, peeling his hand from her throat. “Julian, I’ve never owed you anything.”
Julian fought back the urge to hurt her more, watching as she slowly inched away.
She was eight months pregnant now. The baby was too far along for any abortion pill to work. But her water had already broken. The pain in her stomach was only getting worse. The baby was coming. She needed to get to a hospital.
“Where do you think you’re going?” His voice was ice cold, sending a chill down her spine.
