Five years later...
In a hospital in Country Y, Madeline stood at the front of the conference room, white lab coat crisp and spotless. She held up a patient’s report, her pointer gliding across the slide projected on the wall as she explained her proposed treatment.-
A row of medical experts sat at the table, listening closely. When she finished, one of them raised a hand, brow furrowed. “Dr. Astrid, are you saying you want to use acupuncture for this patient?”
Madeline nodded. “Yes, that's right.”
Dr. Hester, who had been quietly observing from the side, chimed in. “Astrid, the patient isn’t just anybody. He asked for you by name. Are you sure you’re up for this?”
Madeline glanced at the case file, then met Dr. Hester’s gaze with a calm, confident smile. “Don’t worry. I’m sure.”
Her answer seemed to put Dr. Hester at ease. She first came to the hospital three years ago, recommended personally by the old director. She was only twenty-five, a single mom with a two-year-old son, and most people doubted whether she could really handle it. But in just three years, she’d proved everyone wrong, shutting down the skeptics with her skills and earning the respect of the entire hospital.
If Madeline said she could do it, Dr. Hester didn’t need to worry at all.
“Alright,” he said. “The patient is already waiting in the exam room. He wants a more thorough check-up. Come with me.”
Madeline glanced at her watch. She should have been on her way to pick up Oliver from school. But since the patient was already here, she didn’t have a choice. She quickly called to apologize to her little boy, asking Casey to pick him up instead.
After hanging up, she slipped her mask over her face, her usual calm and cool expression returning. She followed Dr. Hester down the hallway and into the exam room.
Inside, a man sat on the sofa. Even at rest, he radiated authority. His long legs were crossed, his expensive dark suit perfectly pressed, though his handsome face looked pale and tired. His eyes were closed, and he seemed completely unaware of the two nurses standing quietly against the wall. They looked tense, almost shrinking into themselves, careful not to make a sound.
