Madeline’s fear ran so deep it felt like her whole body was shaking. She wanted to run, but bolting now would only draw attention. All she could do was stay put and hope he wouldn’t realize who she was. In her mind, she kept repeating the same silent prayer—please, don’t let him recognize me.
Julian finally spoke, his voice calm but impossible to ignore. He crooked his finger, calling her over. “Come here.”-
Her heart thudded in her chest so hard she wondered if he could hear it. Under Julian’s piercing stare, Madeline forced herself to walk over. Before he could say anything else, she jumped into her routine, checking him with steady hands, trying her best to keep it all professional.
A s her fingers brushed against his head, something shifted. Julian went still, his eyes narrowing with suspicion. That touch felt too familiar.
“Have we met before?” His tone was quiet, but there was something dangerous in it.
Her hand froze for a split second. “I don’t think so.”
After a quick examination, she stepped back and kept her voice steady. “I’m sorry, Director. I checked, but this isn’t something I can treat. I’ll go get another doctor.”
She didn’t wait for a response. Madeline walked out, head held high, trying to look calm even though her knees felt weak.
The director looked confused. “What?”
Julian kept his eyes on her retreating figure until she disappeared. Then he stood up so fast his chair scraped the floor. There was something about that woman. She looked so much like… Madeline. The woman who was supposed to be dead.
He was just about to chase after her when his assistant Miles burst in, looking panic-stricken. “Sir, Noah is missing!”
Julian’s eyes went cold, sharp as glass. “What do you mean, missing?”
Miles stammered, nearly tripping over his words. “I took him to the restroom. I was washing my hands, and when I turned around he was gone. I searched everywhere nearby… He’s just… gone.”
Julian’s face turned icy. Miles was nearly in tears. Even though the boy wasn’t Julian’s biological son, he’d been part of the family for years. If anything happened to the kid, Miles knew he’d never forgive himself.
Julian’s patience snapped. “What are you waiting for? Find him!”
