“Get out, Julian. I already hate you enough. Don’t make it worse.”
Madeline’s words came out icy and sharp, and for a second, Julian almost lost it again.
He opened his mouth as if to say something, but nothing came out. Instead, he just slammed his fist into the mirror beside him.
The glass shattered, scattering across the floor. Blood welled up from a long cut on his hand and dripped steadily to the ground.
He didn’t look back as he walked out.
In the hallway, Brenda’s voice rang out, breaking the tension. “What’s going on? Why are you all crowding around here?”
She’d just arrived on the floor to find a cluster of people outside Madeline’s apartment. Thinking something serious must have happened, Brenda hurried inside and spotted Helene. She frowned and walked over. “Helene, how did you even get in here? Where’s Madeline?”
Helene’s eyes were red and furious, her whole face twisted up with anger, looking like she wanted to rip someone apart.
Brenda glanced around, confused, but Madeline was nowhere to be seen.
Just then, the bathroom door opened and Julian stepped out, his face stormy and cold. Helene rushed at him, trying to shove past and get to Madeline. “Madeline, you bitch!”
Julian blocked her with his arm. “What are you doing?”
Helene froze. When she saw the cut on Julian’s lip, her eyes filled with tears. “Julian? What am I doing? She’s seducing you…”
“I forced my way in. She never came after me. Stop blaming her for everything.”
Helene stared at him, her eyes trembling with tears. “Julian? You…”
She wanted to scream, demand to know why he was here with Madeline, but the words stuck in her throat. She just couldn’t bring herself to ask.
She knew Julian didn’t love her. She was terrified that if she pushed him, if she said the wrong thing, he’d end the engagement right then and there.
With nothing else to hold on to, all she could do was cry, hoping maybe he’d feel sorry for her.
Brenda’s eyes caught the knife wound on Julian’s neck, and suddenly she realized how bad things really were.
