Twin Cupids at Work: Daddy, Come Home! novel Chapter 109

There was a gentle knock at the door. Helene stood outside, fidgeting, her arms wrapped around a steaming bowl of noodles.

Josh tossed her a lazy grin. “Well, look who it is. Ms. Fortner, what brings you over?”

“I noticed Julian hasn’t eaten yet. Drinking on an empty stomach isn’t good for him, so I made him some food.” Her eyes were red from crying, her voice just a little shaky. She wore a white dress, her long hair swept up delicately. She looked like someone holding back all her hurt, trying hard not to let it show. It was enough to make anyone feel bad for her.

Helene walked over and placed the bowl in front of Julian. As she set it down, her hand slipped, just enough to show her palm, flushed red from a burn.

Julian’s eyes caught the detail. He raised his eyebrows, but didn’t say a word.

Helene didn’t bring up anything about what happened earlier. She just left the bowl, glanced at Julian with a complicated look, and turned to leave the room without another word.

The silence that followed was awkward. Josh and Brady shared a glance. Josh leaned toward Julian. “So, are we still heading out?”

Julian shot him a look, then stood up from his seat.

Josh and Brady scrambled after him.

Later, at a fancy club, Josh had rounded up a bunch of friends for a night out. Julian sat at the center of the private room, his mood so icy that nobody dared get too close.

Josh tried to lighten things up and had even invited two gorgeous girls to join them, but they barely lasted a few minutes before Julian’s cold demeanor sent them fleeing to the far side of the room.

Josh and Brady were at a loss. This was supposed to cheer Julian up, but he only seemed more miserable.

Brady leaned in and whispered to Josh, “Maybe we should call Madeline.”

Josh hesitated, rubbing his chin. “You really think that’s a good idea?”

“She’s the one who made him this mad. Maybe seeing her would help.”

“Then you call her.”

“No way. You do it.” Brady shoved his phone into Josh’s hand.

Josh stared at Madeline’s number on the screen like he was about to make a life-or-death decision. After a deep breath, he dialed.

It was two in the morning.
