If he knew the child was really his, would he treat him any better? That thought kept running through Madeline’s mind, but Julian turned around with a cold laugh. “My own flesh and blood? Madeline, what’s the point of all these lies?”
Julian never did things he’d regret after drinking, and he was absolutely sure it had only happened once, at his grandfather’s birthday party. When he woke up, Helene was beside him. That was the night she got pregnant.
But what he hadn’t expected at all was that a month later, Madeline had come to him, glowing with happiness, telling him she was pregnant with his child too. He’d had his doubts. Eventually, he found out Helene had drugged Madeline, making her stumble, confused, into another man’s room. That was how she got pregnant.
Thinking about it made Julian’s head ache. Madeline’s hands clenched at her sides. The mocking look on Julian’s face still managed to sting.
“If you don’t believe me, do a paternity test,” Madeline said quietly. “He really is your son.”
Julian’s expression only darkened. The idea that Madeline had been with another man was something he never wanted to talk about. Five years ago, if she hadn’t caused Helene to lose her child, he would’ve kept quiet about the drugging and maybe even raised her child as his own. But now, she kept bringing up what he wanted to forget. Was this really something to be proud of?
Julian walked right up to her, his shadow falling over her. His voice came down, cold and sharp. “You think I haven’t done a DNA test?”
He’d tried to believe her once. He’d gotten the test done. The result had been clear. There was no connection between him and Noah.
“The results weren’t a match, were they?” Madeline looked up at him, her voice trembling. “Julian, what if the test was tampered with? You’ve been raising Noah for five years. In all that time, did you never wonder if he might actually be your son?”
Tears welled up in her eyes. She didn’t know if she was angry or just overwhelmed with sadness. Five years, and Julian still hadn’t recognized his own child. She couldn’t help but think, Julian, if you ever find out Noah is yours, if you realize he suffered right under your nose in the Grayson family, how will you live with that?
