“Let me ask you, why are you punishing him? He’s only five. What could he have possibly done to deserve that? If you’re mad at me, then take it out on me, not him.”
“You think I’m doing that to him?”
“Isn’t it you?”
In that house, whatever he said went. He might not give the order himself, but no one would dare treat Noah like that without his approval.
Julian’s face turned dark, and he let out a bitter laugh. He’s completely fed up with her accusations. She was the one who left, who abandoned her own child, and now she had the nerve to question him?
“So what if I did? He’s a Grayson now. He has nothing to do with you, Madeline. Even if I punish him, it’s not your place to say anything.”
Madeline stared at him, shocked at how shameless he sounded. “I carried him for nine months. You really think I don’t have the right to care about his life?”
Julian looked back at her, almost amused. The woman who left her child behind was now pretending to be the caring mother. If she truly loved Noah, how could she have left him in the first place?
His eyes were blazing with anger. “From the moment you faked your death and left him with me, you lost that right.”
Madeline felt like she’d been punched in the chest. “No,” she shot back, her voice trembling. “I never abandoned him.”
To her, Noah was more important than her own life. There was no way she could have left him behind. She still didn’t know how he ended up at the Grayson house.
“No?”
“Julian, I don’t care if you believe me or not, but I didn’t abandon him. I have no idea what happened, but right now, I’m begging you. If you don’t love him, if you can’t stand him, then please give him back to me. I’ll take him and leave, and you’ll never have to see us again. Just let me have him back.”
“In your dreams.”
