Madeline’s third call went to Oliver. She kept it short, just enough to explain the situation. She couldn’t pick him up today. As long as Julian had no idea Oliver existed, he’d always be safe. If she brought Oliver with her and they got caught, it would be over for everyone. She and Noah were already in enough danger. She wasn’t about to drag Oliver into it. All she needed was two hours, then she could come for him anytime.
Her car pulled up to the hospital. The second she stepped into the room, she saw Noah up close for the first time. He stared at her, completely still, his big eyes wide and shocked. His lips moved, and before he could stop himself, he blurted out, “Mommy.”
Madeline felt her heart clench, the emotion almost too much to hold back. She rushed over to check him, gently looking at his injuries. When she saw the bandages on the back of his head, tears stung her eyes.
“Noah, I’m your mom. I don’t have time to explain everything right now, but will you come with me? Will you leave this place, leave the Grayson family?”
The little boy was still in a fog, but he nodded, automatic and a bit lost. “Yes.”
Relief flooded Madeline’s face. She hugged him tight, kissing his forehead. “Let’s go.”
She helped him into his clothes as fast as she could, scooping him up and heading for the door.
That’s when Helene barged in, carrying a thermal food container. The timing couldn’t have been worse. Helene had been hoping Julian would visit tonight, and she wanted to play the part of the perfect, caring mother. She never expected to walk in and find Madeline trying to leave with Noah.
“Madeline, what do you think you’re doing?” Helene blocked the doorway, arms spread wide. “Where are you taking Noah?”
