Madeline didn’t stick around to listen. She scooped Noah into her arms and rushed downstairs. Helene watched her leave, ready to do what Madeline asked and stall Julian. But then she hesitated. What if Madeline was just putting on a show? What if she wasn’t planning to run at all, and Helene played along and ended up making Julian angry? The thought made Helene frown. She shook off her doubts and ran after them, just in time to see Madeline getting into a black car with Noah.
Without thinking twice, Helene pulled out her phone, snapped a photo of the license plate, and sent it straight to Julian. Madeline actually thought she could trick her into helping. Ridiculous.
From the driver’s seat, Casey caught Helene’s move in the rearview mirror. His lips curled into a cold grin, his eyes gleaming with something dangerous. As soon as Madeline and Noah were inside, he said, “Buckle up.”
Before Madeline could reply, the car shot backward. Helene, who was standing right behind them, let out a scream and fell hard onto the pavement. Madeline glanced back and caught the exact moment Helene hit the ground.
Casey gave a low chuckle, eyebrows raised, his eyes shining with a wild glint. Madeline turned to him. “What was that for?”
“She was taking pictures.”
“It doesn’t matter,” Madeline said quietly. She hadn’t counted on Helene to make the right choice anyway. Even if Helene ratted her out, it made no difference. Julian was already watching her every move. He’d promised not to do anything until the deadline, and Madeline believed him about that, at least.
Helene sat on the ground watching the black car speed away, her face drained of color. Was that driver insane? He almost hit her. No, he’d done it on purpose. Anger burned on her face as she got to her feet.
Inside the car, Noah clung to Madeline, his little arms wrapped tight around her. He could feel her warmth. It didn’t feel real. Was he really going to live with his mommy now? Would he never have to go back to the Grayson house, where everyone but his dad hated him? Was this really happening? It felt like a dream. If it was, he hoped he’d never wake up.
Madeline looked down and saw Noah staring at her, hardly daring to move. Her heart twisted. “Noah, I’m so sorry. If I’d known about you sooner, you wouldn’t have had to suffer so much with the Graysons. I’m so sorry, sweetheart.”
