Even if she tried to take him away now, he knew daddy would never allow it. He would chase after her, no matter what. It was his fault his mom was in danger.
“Silly boy. Don’t say that. You didn’t do anything wrong. This has always been between me and Julian. You just got caught up in it, and for that, I should apologize.”
Once she and Noah had finally calmed down, Casey spoke up from the driver’s seat. “What did you trade with Julian?”
Madeline hesitated, her eyes turning dull and heavy. In the rearview mirror, Casey caught the look on her face and his lips curled in a cold sneer. His eyes were sharp and icy. “Was it you... or your freedom?”
Madeline took a deep breath, struggling to find the words.
When she stayed silent, Casey seemed to understand. “How could you?” The anger in his voice was impossible to miss.
Madeline glanced down at the little boy in her arms and tried to reassure him. “Don’t worry. I’ve got a plan.”
If she won this game, she could take both her kids and disappear. If she lost, Julian would drag her and Noah back. But if he tried to hurt her, he better remember that he still needed her to treat his illness. As long as he wasn’t cured, she still had something over him.
The moment she agreed to Julian’s terms, Madeline had already started planning her escape. Even if Julian went back on his word and tried to play dirty, she wouldn’t give in. If it came down to it, she would just refuse to divorce him. She’d keep him trapped with her forever. He could forget about marrying Helene.
Of course, she didn’t want it to come to that. She just wanted to leave with the kids without any drama. That would be best for everyone.
Casey was so angry he wanted to curse, but he swallowed his words and slammed his foot on the gas. The car shot forward, faster than ever.
They arrived at a wide, empty airstrip. A helicopter was already waiting. Madeline checked her watch. Time was running out. She held Noah close and followed Casey out of the car without hesitating.
By the helicopter, there were a dozen men dressed in black, hats pulled low over their faces. Only their eyes showed, sharp and cold. These were Casey’s men.
