Twin Cupids at Work: Daddy, Come Home! novel Chapter 137

Julian’s brows pulled together for a second as he glanced at Madeline, his voice laced with sarcasm. “You really think you can threaten me just because you want to stop this marriage?”

Madeline’s voice shot up, sharp and clear. “If you’re so set on marrying her, why are you keeping me around? Do I just get in your way?”

She still remembered how cold he’d been when he made her sign the divorce papers. If he wanted Helene that badly, why not just let Madeline go? It didn’t make sense. Truth be told, Julian couldn’t figure it out either. Just the thought of her with someone else made his skin crawl. The only way to ease that feeling was to keep her close. He was never going to let her leave. Not a chance.

Madeline stared at him, searching for an explanation, but Julian just sneered. “Do I owe you an explanation? All you need to know is you’re not getting away from me. You might as well stop fighting and save your energy.”

She stared at him, her fists clenched so tight her knuckles turned white. She closed her eyes and stayed silent. After all these years, she knew exactly what kind of man he was. Why bother hoping he’d ever say anything remotely nice?

The boat docked. Julian grabbed her hand and shoved her into the car. Madeline sat quietly, not struggling, not protesting. There was no point. Arguing with him never worked anyway, so she decided to save her strength.

The car was packed but silent. The driver and Miles kept their mouths shut. Julian didn’t say a word, and Madeline had no interest in talking. The air was so still it felt heavy.

Julian glanced at her, noticing how calm she’d gotten. Madeline was pressed up against the window, still wearing his shirt and pants, staring out at the world as if he wasn’t even there. Julian looked away and suddenly asked, “Are you cold?”

Madeline turned to him, her tone flat. “No.”

Julian leaned back, looking completely relaxed, and said to the driver, “Open the window.”

The window slid down, and a gust of chilly autumn wind whipped right across Madeline’s face. The car sped up and she couldn’t help but turn away from the window, staring straight ahead. Was Julian doing this on purpose? She’d said she wasn’t cold, but she never said she was feeling hot either. Now the freezing wind was pouring in like nobody’s business. She was convinced he was messing with her.

Julian looked every bit the part of the cold, perfect businessman, legs crossed, face expressionless, calmly reviewing a file. Madeline shot him a glare. She didn’t notice the faint smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
