Even though she was seething inside, she had to keep her expression perfectly calm, acting like she hadn’t noticed a thing. She held herself with the grace and poise expected of the lady of the house.

When Madeline looked at Helene, it felt like looking at her past self. She remembered what it was like, always having to stand by and watch while Helene clung to Julian. There was nothing she could do to stop it. To avoid making things awkward, she forced herself to play the part of the perfect wife, always composed, always gracious, and constantly telling herself that nothing was really going on between them.

Madeline pulled her gaze away, letting a thin, cold smile flicker across her lips. She turned to Julian. “I didn’t bring my needles today.”

“I already had some prepared for you.” Julian nodded toward the needle kit on the table.

Madeline picked it up, checked it over, then looked back at him. “Where do you want to do this?”

Julian stood, his face unreadable. “Upstairs.”

She grabbed the kit and followed him up, while Helene stood off to the side, jaw clenched so tight it looked like she might crack a tooth.

It’s fine, Helene told herself over and over. It’s fine. She won’t get to be smug for long.

Julian led the way to his room and found a lounge chair to stretch out on, legs long and relaxed. Madeline pulled up a chair and sat next to him.

Julian closed his eyes. He could hear her nearby, the soft rustle of her setting everything up. There was a light, clean scent coming from her, something subtle and comforting that seemed to fill the empty room and make it easier to breathe.

Madeline got everything ready, then started the acupuncture. Just like she always did, she let him know what to expect with every needle, calmly explaining that any sensations were normal and nothing to worry about.

For once, her voice was gentle, no hint of the usual chill. It was soft, almost musical, and it brought a warmth to the quiet room that had been missing for a long time.
