When Madeline got home, she headed straight for Oliver’s room. Marian, the nanny, was coming out quietly and almost jumped when she saw Madeline. “Oh, Ms. Monroe, you’re back? I thought you said you might not make it home tonight.”

Madeline smiled. “Plans changed. Did Oliver get to sleep?”

“He just did. He was so worried about you, he couldn’t settle down at all.”

Madeline pressed her lips together, then tiptoed over to Oliver’s bed. She looked down at him, her face softening as she watched him sleep. Turning to Marian, she said quietly, “Thank you for taking care of him.”

Marian waved her off. “Oliver’s an angel, honestly. He’s easy to look after. Ms. Monroe, is everything okay? You’ve been away a lot lately.”

Madeline just shook her head. “Just work, Marian. It’s late. You should get some rest.”

Marian didn’t push. She nodded. “You too, Ms. Monroe.”

“Thanks.” Madeline nodded back.

She made sure Oliver was tucked in, then remembered something and hurried off to find a spare phone. She dialed Casey.

He picked up almost instantly, his voice low and rough. “You home?”

Madeline nodded out of habit. “Yeah, just got in. How’s Noah?”

“He’s fine. Actually, he’s better than fine.” Casey sounded tired and a little irritated. “What about you?”
