Lucy took a slow sip of her tea and lifted an eyebrow at Helene. “Go on, then.”
“I’m on it,” Helene replied, her face lighting up as she hurried off to find a lawyer.
Later that afternoon, when Madeline was driving home from work, she noticed a car tailing her just as she reached the entrance to her neighborhood. She tilted her head, checked the rearview mirror, and instead of heading straight home, she pulled into an empty parking spot.
Sure enough, the car pulled in right behind her. The window rolled down, and Helene greeted her with a bright smile. “Ms. Monroe, hop in. Let’s have a chat.”
Madeline just stared, silent. She honestly had no idea what she’d done to deserve this kind of relentless attention.
Didn’t Helene have a company to run? As far as Madeline knew, Raine’s so-called perfumery skills were barely passable, and yet Helene had her as the lead perfumer. That alone should have kept her busy.
With Raine stirring up trouble every day, how did Helene still have time to chase after her?
“Helene, don’t you have anything better to do?”
“Actually, Mrs. Grayson wants to talk to you today,” Helene said, tilting her head toward the back seat.
Madeline looked over and found herself staring into Lucy’s stern face.
Lucy met her eyes, her gaze cold and full of dislike. “Madeline, let’s have a real conversation.”
Madeline let out a short laugh. “What’s there to talk about? I’m supposed to be the one bothering you, but it’s always the Grayson family blocking my way. It’s almost funny.”
First Julian.
Then Helene.
Now Lucy.
It was like they couldn’t go a single day without seeing her.
Lucy frowned, clearly annoyed by the woman who used to be so obedient but now only had sarcasm for her.
“Madeline, don’t make me repeat myself. I’m trying to be civil, but if you won’t listen, I’m gonna send someone after you.”
“Ms. Monroe, we do have something important to discuss. You don’t want to keep this up out here in the street, do you?”
