Madeline crossed her arms and stared them down. “The divorce agreement Julian wanted me to sign had a billion-dollar settlement. This new one? I get nothing. So, where’s the money? Did you two swallow it?”

A billion dollars! The words hung in the air. Helene and Lucy glanced at each other, both looking like they’d bitten into something sour. Helene scoffed, “Ms. Monroe, are you really that desperate for cash?”

Lucy chimed in. “Dream on. We won’t give you anything.”

Madeline pushed back her chair and stood up. “Then what’s left to discuss? I’m not stupid. You already took what’s rightfully mine, and now you expect me to sign off on it like some fool? That’s low, even for you.”

Lucy slammed her palm on the table, her patience gone. “Madeline, get back here! A billion dollars? Take a good look at yourself. You stole Helene’s place, you killed her child, and we haven’t even come after you for damages. Now you have the nerve to ask for a billion? Where’s your shame?”

Madeline leaned in, voice cool. “And let’s not forget, Julian was running around with Helene behind my back, getting her pregnant while we were still married. He’s the one who cheated. He’s the one in the wrong. If anyone should be kicked out with nothing, it’s him. Why should it be me?”

The old Madeline might have caved by now, but not this time. She wasn’t backing down. What was hers would stay hers. Not a single cent less.
