The two women froze in the middle of the street, wide-eyed and terrified. Helene took one look at the oncoming car and bolted, leaving Lucy stranded.
Lucy was left alone, helpless in the middle of the road. She called for help, but no one answered. Then, with a sickening thud, a car slammed into her wheelchair, sending her flying.
Helene didn’t make it far either. As she darted across, another car hit her and knocked her to the ground.
Madeline heard the crash and spun around. She saw Lucy and Helene sprawled on the pavement. For a second, she just stared, stunned at the scene in front of her.
Right then, her phone buzzed. It was Miles. She answered, trying to keep her voice steady. “Ms. Monroe, where are you? Mr. Grayson wants to pick you up.”
Madeline glanced at the chaos around her, turned back toward the wreck, and rattled off her location. “Get over here now. Lucy and Helene just got hit by cars.”
Horns blared all around, making it hard to hear. On the other end, Miles sounded confused. “What did you say? Who was in the accident? Was it you? Hello? Hello?”
The call dropped. Miles panicked, thinking the worst. “No, the call’s dead. Sir, Ms. Monroe was in an accident!”
Madeline had no idea Miles hadn’t heard her clearly. She hung up and immediately dialed for an ambulance.
The drivers who hit Lucy and Helene jumped out of their cars, yelling as they approached. Madeline knelt beside the two women, checking their injuries.
One of the drivers shouted at her, “Hey, are you with them? It’s not our fault. These two ran out in front of us. No one could’ve stopped in time. We’re not to blame, everyone saw it.”
Madeline’s head throbbed. “Is this really the time to argue about whose fault it is?” The noise and the chaos were getting to her.
