Twin Cupids at Work: Daddy, Come Home! novel Chapter 149

Helene’s eyes shimmered with nerves as she stared at Julian, trying to hold back the lump in her throat. She opened her mouth, hesitated, then swallowed her words.

Julian’s tone was sharp, almost impatient. “What did she say?” He motioned for her to keep going.

Helene bit her lower lip, her eyes filling with tears. “Mrs. Grayson thought the one billion in the divorce settlement was way too much for Ms. Monroe, so she wanted to talk things over. But Ms. Monroe said she’d walk away from the money, as long as we got down on our knees and shouted ten times… ‘I cheated, I’m the other woman, we’re shameless.’ If we did that, she’d let the money go. Then she said you should leave the marriage with nothing. Wasn’t that too much? That’s why Mrs. Grayson tried to argue with her, and that’s when the accident happened.”

When Helene finished, Julian’s brows knit together as he glanced at Madeline. “You said all that?”

“I did,” Madeline answered, meeting his gaze. “Is that a problem?”

She honestly didn’t see what was so wrong about it. They’d said way worse to her, so why was everyone acting like she’d crossed a line?

Madeline was about to say more, but Julian’s voice cut through the room, icy and demanding. “Apologize.”

Madeline frowned at him. “Apologize?”

“Don’t you think you should?”

She smirked, but there was no humor in it. “Why? Did I lie about you? About her?”

Julian’s eyes were cold enough to freeze. “You don’t think that was out of line? Because of you, my mother is in the emergency room, and Helene’s in a wheelchair. Is it really so hard to just say sorry?”

Madeline’s patience snapped. “Did you even ask what they said to me? Did I go looking for trouble? Did I chase after them? So it’s fine for them to throw insults at me, but if I talk back, I’m the monster?”

She looked Julian in the eye, her voice steady. “Is everyone in your family this overbearing? Do you really expect the world to bow and scrape for you?”

Julian stared her down, his expression unreadable. “I just asked for an apology. Do you really have to make this so difficult?”

Madeline let out a sharp laugh. “Fine.”

Whatever. No point wasting her breath when no one would listen anyway.

She turned to leave, but Helene caught her arm. “You haven’t apologized to me yet. Where do you think you’re going?”

“Let go.” Madeline shook off Helene’s hand.

Helene stumbled and fell forward, landing hard on the floor with a painful thud. She cried out, but Madeline kept walking, not even glancing back.

Julian’s stare turned dangerous, anger simmering beneath the surface.

Madeline was like a porcupine. Get too close, and you’d get hurt.

Miles hurried over to help Helene up. Her eyes, rimmed with red, flicked to Julian. His attention was fixed on Madeline’s retreating figure. Helene bit her lip, anxious. “Julian, you’re just going to let her walk away? Mrs. Grayson is still…”

Julian’s jaw tightened. “What else do you want? Since when do I need you to make my decisions?”
