Madeline blinked, suddenly aware that she was in Julian’s arms. She looked up at him, confused. “What are you doing?”
Julian heard the disbelief in her voice and frowned. “You’re alive?”
Madeline almost laughed. Seriously? She saves his mom and the first thing out of his mouth is, “You’re alive?”
She tapped his arm, signaling for him to let her go. “Were you hoping I wasn’t?” Her voice was icy.
Julian glanced at her, clearly surprised she was perfectly fine. He looked over at Miles, who was still gawking at Madeline. “Ms. Monroe, you’re… okay?” Miles stammered.
Madeline’s bright eyes flicked between them. She shook her head. “I’m fine, really.”
Julian narrowed his eyes and shot Miles a look.
Miles turned back to her, a little nervous. “Ms. Monroe, didn’t you say you were in a car accident?”
Madeline hesitated for a second. “It wasn’t me. Who told you that? It was Lucy and Helene.”
Julian’s eyes darkened. He frowned at her. “So what happened?”
“Your mom’s pretty badly hurt. She’s in the emergency room, but it looks like she’ll pull through. Helene’s injuries aren’t serious. She’ll be okay.”
Julian pressed on. “Why were you all together?”
Madeline sighed. “Your mom and Helene came looking for me. They wanted me to sign a new divorce agreement, one where I’d leave with nothing. I said no and tried to walk away. Helene pushed your mom’s wheelchair and chased after me. They weren’t watching where they were going, ran straight into the street, and got hit.”
